Ditto on all those except the sponge. looks like algae to me.
I have the halimeda, clam foot and hidden cup in my tank. Common on caribbean and fl live rock. All harmless.
I am just about exhausted. Tank is painted (1 can of opalescent sheen, 5 cans of krylon navy blue). 1 bag of sand in. 1 100lb bag to go. Tank is 90% full of water.
Fish transfer is going to have to wait until tomorrow.
Here is the final pic of the 55, taken this morning...
Yep. Pics are in the plans. But keep in mind, this one is staying closer to a true biotope than the mbuna planted. Sure, of course, it can't be an MCD/T.S. tank without plants, but there won't be as many. It's more about the fish and the hardscape, baby.
Right now, the stock is:
Neolamp...
The 55 tanganyikan joint production is moving!
They got lucky on craigslist these past few weeks and managed to score a 125. They are going to be moving into some new digs tonight.
The 55 is about to become a S.American tank.
Whoo hoo!
I r get him a brackish tank. He doesn't know yet cuz he is sleeeeeeeeeping. It has a puffer, an eel and a leaf fish.
*shhhhhhhhhhhh* =).
He's been wanting one. It's all set up, waiting for him.
when you use a substrate for planted tanks, don't plan to layer it. You will end up mixing the gravel and the planted substrate. It is inevitable. If you don't mix it by planting and cleaning and such, your fish/snails/shrimps will mix it for you.
I sometimes use mixes of planted subs with...
I was a fan of the "low light/low maintenence" until I got to see how Trav does his tank in person.
Wow, so much easier, so much lower maintenence, so much more growth.
Low light = TOUGH in my opinion and experience. I had nothing but problems.
I am a high light convert.
I am using flourish with no problems for my shrimp and snails. I also have some eco mixed in.
Most planted substrates are fine for inverts. Iron isn't a problem for them...copper is.

My experiences:
1.) I mix 1/2 gallon warm water, 1/2tsp baking yeast, 3 cups of sugar and 1/4 cup molassas (or honey, if I have one or the other on hand). This lasts me about a month or so.
2.) I...

You could look up your water report on the water company's website to find out more information. Add a pretty conch shell to your tank or a natural dead coral or some barnicles. Anything from the sea that is dead will help harden the water, or like...
Me personally? When I set up a new tank to add to my existing four?
I either:
A.) Wait until either Travis or I clean out a filter and steal Eheim cocoa puffs and stuff them in an old pair of nylons. Add to new filter with a stinky sponge or some stinky floss media from one of the running...
