I have seen nematodes under a microscope at the bio lab and they need to be stained for particular structures or all you will see is a blob of white. This depends on the species but staining will make viewing easier. I think we used Safranin to stain them.
I agree with RogerMcAllen because diseases, wether viral, bacterial or fungal, are very specific to certain species. And it is close to impossible for a human to get a disease directly from a fish.
Angels are really not affected by pH and hardness. A pH of 7.2 is even fine for discus. Angels show more natural behavior when kept in pairs or larger groups but a single angel will be fine.
Community fish don't get much bigger than angels. Angels grow to be about 4" long and 8" high in the aquarium. Bigger in larger tanks if kept right. If you have the space you can have a couple of clown loaches. They are bottom feeders that are quite active and they sometimes get bigger than 10".
I use an ion exchange resin in my discus tank. You place the resin inside a sock or something porous and place it in the filter. It can reduce your hardness to 6 dGH in about 5 hours. But this depends on your tank size and what type of filter you use.
My friend just bought and lost 2 of those a couple of months ago. The hard bit is getting them to eat. But if you give them the saltier end of brackish water and plenty of live food they should thrive.
They are really cool because they have reduced and almost lost their swim bladder to be able...
I have canister filters for my 75g discus tank and another for the guppy tank.
I'm used to doing daily water changes because of the discus fry that are currently occupying the 25, so that won't be a problem. they also have a sponge filter (ugly and bulky but best for discus fry). I think that...
I'm thinking of setting up a 25gal tank for an oranda. Is it ok to use a sponge filter, but doing daily 20% water change?
Or is it ok to have no filter and do 50% daily? (I don't like the look of filters in small tanks)
Nicky.
They're not gone. They've hatched! But they're so tiny that you either don't see them or they get sucked up into the filter. If you have small fish in the tank, the shrimp larvae would be live food.
Yes, they're eggs!
If you are just starting with tetras, I would not recommend neons or cardinals since they are not at all hardy. There are many hardy tetras that include the black phantom tetras, serpae tetras, glowlight tetras and black widow tetras. Congo tetras are VERY attractive but you would need to keep...
I think I'm keeping them and probably breeding them. I'm hoping to have fifteen good ones. The ones that don't have the best size or shape will be kept in a display tank.
