My advice is to ditch the UGF and switch to sand. I changed both of my tanks to sand after my suicidal goldie tried to swallow a piece of gravel... and I love the sand! its easier to clean and my plants are growing faster.
p.s. if you do decide to change substrate don't replace it all at once...
It only cost me $80 and was in amazing condition. It just needed a good cleaning. which I did and then my friend dropped it while helping me carry in from outside after it had dried.

Do you have a lid on your tank? if so try taking it off or at least partially off, that and increasing the water agitation in you tank should drop the temp down a few degrees.
