My red tetras and corys will school together occasionally. But for the most part they prefer to school with their own kind.

+1 on the assasian snails I had the same problem in my community tank thanks to lfs plants. They get the job done

My advice is to ditch the UGF and switch to sand. I changed both of my tanks to sand after my suicidal goldie tried to swallow a piece of gravel... and I love the sand! its easier to clean and my plants are growing faster. p.s. if you do decide to change substrate don't replace it all at once...

Do you have a lid on your tank? if so try taking it off or at least partially off, that and increasing the water agitation in you tank should drop the temp down a few degrees.
