yeah, tetras all breed in very simular ways. You can make artificial spawning mops from a cork and some acrylic yarn. A darker green is what i have had success with.

if you keep serpae tetras in a group of 5 or more, they will leave your other fish alone and only bug each other. Also, having lots of cover in your tank will reduce this behavior.

Brown water from tannins isn't necessarily a bad thing. For instance, if you are trying to create a Amazon biotope you will want the tannins for a more realistic result. Some fish even require tannins in the water to get them to spawn.

To clean the sand after the tank has been running for a while, i just use a 1/8" tube and siphon off the junk that is sitting on top of the sand. If you do it right only the garbage will be sucked up and the sand stays on the bottom.
