Yes I have given up attempting to control my PH.
I just asked this question in the slight hope that snails may help without too much fussing about.
The only fish I am sort of concerned about is the Black Ghost Knifefish, as I've never had one of these before.
But so far he seems ok with the...
I'm still relatively new at this, but I've been researching lots.
I read that snails need calcium in the water for their shells. So I'm wondering if having lots of snails in your tank will reduce the calcium levels thus affecting the water hardness.
I'm not an expert on water hardness and ph...
Oh! And the other piece of invaluable advice I read somewhere ..... which I am using with great results ....
Is that the instructions on the can of fish food LIES!!!!
You DO NOT need to feed them all they can eat in 5 minutes. That is WAY TOO MUCH. When I followed these instructions my fish all...
I have found the advice on this site to be invaluable. It has saved me from losing any more fish!!
I would sum up for other Newbies (or Noobs like me) in this way :
There should NEVER be a reading for Ammonia or NitrItes ... if you get a reading on your test kit, DO a partial water change. The...
RJRoFL .... I only WISH I had read all this stuff BEFORE I got my first two tanks!!
At present I have 3 tanks, one has juuuuust cycled, the next is in the nitrite spike phase, and the last is the fishless tank.
SIGH.
The first 2 have fish in em. (oops made that mistake BEFORE finding this site.)
I really appreciated this article! THANKS!!!!!
I am a noob, but trying to learn really fast. It IS complicated, but not as hard to understand as I first thought.
I made the mistake of getting a tank and whacking fish in it. I lost 2 gouramis before I thought I better find I WHY I lost them...
Hmm you might have hit the nail on the head here. **Hangs head in shame**
I tend to over feed. I kill with love apparently.
I have learned my lesson (poor gourami) and am more careful now. But yes I plead guilty to over feeding.
So would this have put my cycle waa-ay out?
And I wasn't aware...
Yeah I've already found out that info on treatment for disease. And yes he is scaleless. I've already set up a little medical tank just in case I need to treat someone. I have a heater and filter in it now (no fish) just to cycle the filter so its ready when I need it.
I did try to catch the...
Yes I did make that mistake the first time I cleaned the tank when I first got it (cleaning the filter) (DOH wish I'd researched BEFORE I got it). And possibly within the first 2 weeks or so I did it again.
But that's it. Once I researched enough info, I stopped that promptly and have not done...
Thanks .... the tank is now 4 months old .... I did water 25% water changes bi weekly for the first 6 weeks .... thinking it should have cycled by then.
I'm still trying to get the hang of all this. I only do 25% weekly changes now. Should I do more?
WHY would it still be not fully cycled after...
Wow your plants are AWESOME! My plants don't grow that well, but I'm still a noob and getting the hang of it. I just got some plant nutrients to try .... hope they help my plants to grow as well as yours!!
I must say, the my African tank is much easier lol, no plants.
Thanks for sharing!
Uh yep Ammonia tests at 0.
So even .5 is high for Nitrites?
And thanks for the tip for the testing kit. I am currently only using the test kits I got with my 2nd hand tank ..... learning as I go!
The Tank is definitely cycled ... its 4 months old.... I did 25% water changes bi-weekly at first because I did not know how to use the testing equipment and was worried about ammonia... lol maybe I still dont know how to use em. shoot.
Now I just do 25% weekly changes
I still dont know how to...
