Water Options - Initial Tank Fill

The individual is questioning what water to use on the initial fill of the tank. I was giving an alternative to purchasing water and using my tank as an example of how tap water can do just fine. Nobody is obligated to agree with me.

Water Options - Initial Tank Fill

:D I agree that it is just semantics. Everyone has their own way of referring to things. When I cycled my tank I called it my little eco-disaster area. Essentially the tank does crash with the high spikes in the bad stuff that then over time the natural process does its own clean up to bring...

What part of the screen name R6Chick makes you think I am a 'he'? :clown:

Water Options - Initial Tank Fill

All tanks crash as part of the cycling process.

Water Options - Initial Tank Fill

The tank is gonna crash anyway. No reason to throw money around if you don't have to. I filled my 112 acrylic tank with uncured live rock and water straight from the garden hose, mixed in the salt as I went. I added the standard water conditioners, a couple of jumbo shrimp for good measure, and...

    Nor-Cal

Not everyone can be all things to all people. They have saved me a small fortune and always take the time to explain things to me. Plus I LOVE the beautiful sweetheart of a mastif he brings in most days. I think I will check out the two you list as well. I never put all my eggs in one basket...

    Wow.....

He is just doing it old school. That is pretty much how we all did it back in the day. One of my first salt tanks was a 150 gallon that I pretty much cycles exactly like that. Sometimes people would cycle the tank using fresh water and goldfish then ditch the goldfish, add salt, and go from there.

    New water for new tank?

There is no guarantee that tap is going to have algae issues. I have seen just as many R/O tanks with algae issues as tap tanks. ****, 12 years ago everyone used tap water and things worked great. Back then I ran 150 gallon FOWLR tank with nothing more than 2 power heads, an under gravel filter...

    New water for new tank?

One of the shops around here charges a buck a gallon for R/O salt water. Your experience may vary.

    New water for new tank?

No point in starting with pristine water in a new tank. The tank is going to crash anyway, that's the point of cycling. Add your water treatment stuff if you have not already and some salt.

    Snowflake Eel questions

I used to hand feed my snowflake eel. He was in a tank with a big grouper and wolf eel so if I wanted him to eat I had to hand feed. The grouper would only eat until full but the wolf eel would eat until there was no food left! The snowflake was just not as aggressive so the hand feeding worked...

I am in San Jose as well and have been checking out some of the LFS here determining who I will be getting most of my business. So far I am the most impressed and happiest with The Aquarium Showroom Welcome to The Aquarium Showroom. They have pretty good review on Yelp as well...
