I added the three swordtails when I only had two black skirts and one red eye. I liked the sword tails but it sounds like my small number of black skirts...

I have a 20 gallon tall tank that has mainly been a community tank (my first). It's been up and running over a year with mainly various tetras such as black skirts, neons, red eyes, and over the months I've mixed in corys, a blue flame gourami, some african dwarf frogs, maybe a couple more...

It was 3 albinos and one emerald green cory but nonetheless a mystery. Just did a 25% pwc last night and all parameters normal. I think I was overfeeding which may have led to somewhat elevated nitrates. I also noticed some algae growth on the glass for the first time yesterday (no real plants...

As an example of the randomness I just found my last albino cory dead. Hes been in there for at least a week.

Not within first 24 hours but most within 2 - 3 days I would say.

I have 4 red eye tetras and when I bought them I never thought about male or female. My daughter noticed this fish has gotten fat. Its starting to look like a small hatchet fish. Definitely not as streamlined as the others. Thanks for your help.

Regardless of the quality of your water, fancy goldfish grow to 8" or so. How can an 8" fish swim in a 5g tank?

I just saw a 40B kit today at PetSmart for about $175. Even if you upgrade filtration and add furnishings you should be well under $500.

Update on EX45 Filter Hi Clare. I found this old thread and was wondering if you are still using the EX45 filter. I have one on my 20G and have been running it for a month or so. I figure I need to start thinking about changing filter pad and was looking to avoid the pads that come from Tetra...

From looking at the pics it seems like a different setup. I assume remove the pad from the rear filter compartment. Water comes up from the bottom of the rear compartment through the pad and then through the plastic cartridge which catches big stuff. What would I put in the rear compartment...

I hate to jump in like this but I have a similar situation. I have a Tetra Whisper EX 45 hob. I dont want to buy the tetra replacement pads. The front slot is a plastic cartridge and the rear slot is the tetra pad. What setup would you suggest to avoid buying tetra pads?
