    White cloud mountain minnows

Trumpet snails,Gravel vaccum. You don't really have room for more fish =more waste=poor water quality.

    What substrate to use?

Were it me,,I might consider beginning with 6 to 8 hour photo period. Actinic bulbs while maybe not especially helpful for plant's, Algae are not at handicapp with this lighting. 4x54 watts of T5 over 55 gal tank may present the need to raise the light fixture above the tank . If the tank was...

    Dust/Dirt harming canister filters?

Could put a prefilter sponge over the intake to the filter. Would still consider rinsing media in dechlorinated water and possibly cleaning the impelller asembly after the tank had cleared. Is the oil dry for planted tank? Have you considered capping the oil dry with a layer of fine gravel?

Good idea or a bad one? filters + new tank

Yes,the moving of decor and running both filters for a few weeks on the new larger tank, would give bacteria big boost and could possibly allow the fish to be moved same day as filter from old tank. Would feed sparingly for a while as well, until the FX5 has sufficient bacteria...

    Filter too strong for betta

Take a hacksaw and cut the flow control tube shorter?. Would not worry myself about the betta and flow so long as the betta is not being swept around the tank. betta is prolly feeding from the bottom cause the danios are snatching all the food much faster than the betta can. Not much that swims...

Help needed --- fin rot & dead fish

1/4 to 1/2 cup of crushed coral per 20 gal in mesh bag and stuffed into the filter compartment will raise hardness,pH. Clean or replace each month. Or,,simply keep fish that like softer water.

    Newbie questions!

Do be aware that simply leaving the tank ,filter, heater running while you are away will not cycle the aquarium. For the maturing process or cycling to take place, there must be a source of food for the good bacteria to consume. You could take one or two small uncooked raw shrimp and place them in...

    detergent residue

If all of the gravel being used has been stored in the bucket that formerly held soap, then I would not use it but that's just me. If the bucket that formerly held soap was rinsed really well before placing the gravel in ,then perhaps it would pose less risk. If you don't know whether the...

    Top for guppies?

Are there not perforated dots so to speak along the edge of the hood on one side?those that i have seen do and it becomes necessary to take a pair of pliers and gently bend the plastic along these dots to create opening to allow a hang on the back filter and also a smaller area for heater cable...

    Mystery problems with tank/fish

Would maybe test the tapwater for nitrates and if levels are zero or low, then perhaps I might get aggressive with gravel vaccum and reduce feedings as well until nitrate levels were lowered. Would note that mollies and guppies prefer hard alkaline water that tetras don't enjoy in the long run...

I just got an 55 gallon aquarium

Would not worry about messing with pH level. While lower ph will render ammonia less toxic, the fluctuations with each water change if tapwater is not same as tank water will have negative effect on the fish. Would change water as you have planned but would not mess with the pH. You may only...

I just got an 55 gallon aquarium

Many have made the same mistake of adding fish before the tank has matured or (cycled). Do you have any friends with aquariums holding fish? If so ,borrowing some filter material from their tank and placing it in your filter will help the fish to survive the maturing process. Is important to...

    Top for guppies?

Run a small sponge filter in my ten gallon tank as well as a twenty gallon. So long as there is some surface agitation from HOB filter or sponge filter, there will be no issues with oxygen depletion.

    Best Treatment for Fin rot

Always a good idea to get water tested when fish show abnormal behaivor to see that ammonia and nitrites are zero ,and nitrAtes are no higher than 20 ppm. If conditions are anything but those mentioned, medications will have little effect. Agree that clean water is often best medicine.
