A year on almost from this post, I am happy to say the 20g is cured of all algae I got rid of the fake rock for lava rock, added multiple aqua soils to the substrate and cut back feeding a little bit

Thank you. I did a rescape yesterday that kinda split the tank into thirds: the bog and cave at the left end, a planted reef in the middle, and an iwagumi carpeted section at the very right end. It looks smaller inside, but even more cohesive and somehow even looks bigger than it did.
