are there fake dwarf hairgrasses or just different condition

If growing conditions are adequate, once the plants get established they will look better/fuller than this picture. I've tried trimming hairgrass down to 1/2" or so before planting and also just planting them and trimming them after they established themselves. I recommend planting them and...

    PPS, EI or other?

I use a modified PPS, with weekly water changes. It's really similar to EI, but (1)you dose everyday (2) The doses are more precise. Really the idea behind EI, if I'm not mistaken of course, is that excess dosing does not cause algae. So I guess you could say I use a combination of both...

are there fake dwarf hairgrasses or just different condition

Oh, yeah, back on topic, The last picture has emersed growth also (see the tips? They look like "pine cones") Alot of how hairgrass looks in your tank has to do with lighting/substrate/fertilization/etc./etc. As best I can recall, amano lists his shorter hairgrass as E. acicularis. However...

are there fake dwarf hairgrasses or just different condition

The first picture looks like it has some color adjustments but looks like E. parvula to me, just more established. The second picture looks like it has dead emersed growth so it's not exactly what it looks like.

what species of hairgrass does amano use?

I've seen 3 different (at least) varieties of hairgrass in Amano's tanks. Eleocharis parvula: shorter of the 3, averages 3-4 inches tall Eleocharis acicularis: averages 4-8 inches tall Eleocharis vivipara: taller, averages 20" or so Is there a particular aquascape you are referring to...

    filter?

I vote for canister overall, especially for planted tanks. (same reasons as oscarbreeder) However power filters work well otherwise and are cheaper.

Opinions wanted: Rummy nose vs. Black neon

I won't be adding the angels initially, perhaps a few weeks down the road. I will be buying (unless advised against) 12 rummy nose to start out, then add a few more in months to come.

Opinions wanted: Rummy nose vs. Black neon

Well, it appears the majority votes Rummy nose. Sounds good! I did not know they schooled near the bottom, I think it will look awesome if they "hug" my hairgrass lawn. My tank will be planted with lots of branchy driftwood. As far as the cycling goes, well.... I cannot really say it is...

    Discus

Well put tiptoptank, I just want to stress that I don't think putting a single discus, or even any discus, in a 30-gallon is a good idea. Unless you do strictly breeding and have a pair, I would suggest 120 gallons minimum, discus will get LARGE and of course they do better in a school of 5+

Opinions wanted: Rummy nose vs. Black neon

Hey everyone, I am planning a bigger tank, and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions/pros/cons of Rummy nose or Black neon tetras. I currently have 6 black neons, along with some black phantom tetras. The black neons don't really school very much, but I suppose it could be because of the...

    The Best Substrate?

Many will tell you ADA substrates are top of the line. Personally I won't pay that much for something that isn't all that important, IMO. You can grow plants successfully in most commercially available substrates, even plain old gravel can be used with additives. I don't have experience with...

    New Angelfish!

Nice Angel! Definately not an Altum though. Probably Pterophyllum scalare. Altums have much wider, brownish bars, and more of them.
