    2" to 4" into the hole I would think. You will need to experiment with it. Try a long piece and start sliding it down. Air line tube should work but may need larger. The Principle is to introduce all the air needed for smooth flow into the tube below where the water flows over into the down pipe.

    Try sliding a small tube down in the hole in cap. The proper size and depth may silence the noise. The tube should be snug in hole.

    Looks great. One suggestion. The brass fitting will lose heat to the air quite fast and give a lower reading with low flow rate. It would be more accurate if you put some insulating material around it (some thin foam or cloth would do).
