    Betta not doing so hot

Quick update: my dude continues to be improving. Have been doing 50% WCs and medicating, and the injury is... looking better. At least it is looking cleaner. The dead/loose scales that were causing grey spot in the earlier picture have fallen off, revealing quite a hole in his meaty bits. I've...

    Betta not doing so hot

Thanks, all, for the help! After reading DragonFish's response (and before An t-iasg's), I ran out and got the Pima- and Melafix and added it to the tank. Read An t'iasg's post and ran back to the tank to make sure my lil man could still swim. He could, so... I assume that means he's...

    Betta not doing so hot

Awesome, DragonFish. Just so I'm clear - I want to give both of those meds? Not one or the other? Better to give them all at one time (am/pm) or 1 in the morning and 1 at night. or does it not really matter? Thanks so much!

    Betta not doing so hot

Here is a pic of the lil dude from today. He seemed a little better last night, so I put some more water in (trying to raise it to the point where I can turn the filter back on). He's still hanging in there, but not his normal frisky self. I put a mirror to his tank and he didn't even try to...

    Betta not doing so hot

Hey folks, About a year ago I got my little Betta fish. Recently he hasn't been doing too well. Early this week I noticed he had some sort of tumor or something on one side - just a big swelling under his skin. Looking it up online, it said it could be a fluid-filled cyst or possibly fishie...

    Randomly dead fish :(

Thanks for the input. Good to know about the dechlor - that was my thought, too. I don't think the tank was unusually tall - 15" maybe, but he was just a lil guy... maybe that was like trying to swim 15 miles for a breath. I don't know how old he was - I got him from PetSmart in January. He...

    Randomly dead fish :(

LFS? I'm afraid I don't know what that means. Only translation I can think of is 'local fish store' (??), in which case the answer is 'yes: Petsmart'. Water changes happen about once a week; sometimes a little less frequently, but if that's the case, I a bigger change. I do add dechlor and am...

    Randomly dead fish :(

You must have been replying while I was editing the original post to include that info. Chemical analysis of the water is in process. Ammonia is 0, NitrIte is 0. Nitrate is 4 minutes from being done... results: 10 ppm.

    Randomly dead fish :(

Hey folks, I had three betta fish. They seemed like happy little guys, then one developed (I think) swim bladder disorder from over-feeding (again, I think). I stopped feeding him, and drastically reduced the amount of food the other guys were getting (from 4-5 pellets 2x a day down to 2...

    Cycling with a fish

Thanks again for the advice. This worked perfectly. Swapped the filters Thursday night. Friday morning there was a bit of nitrite in both tanks. This morning, both tanks were 0 for both ammonia and nitrite. Awesome!

    Cycling with a fish

Excellent! I will rub the filters together, and then put the one from the cycled tank into the non-cycled tank. Hopefully that will minimize the impact to the already-cycled tank, while giving the non-cycled one a much-needed kickstart. Thank you so much. The fishies thank you, too, I'm sure. :D

    Cycling with a fish

Nope. The only way I have been managing the ammonia in the tank(s) is by PWCs. Ooooh.... awesome suggestion. I will definitely do that. When you say 'take some material from the filter', are you suggesting that I open the filter itself, pull out some of the charcoal in it and put it into...

    Cycling with a fish

    1. Oh yes. I've been doing regular 40% (2 gal) PWCs to keep ammonia in check, but occasionally will do a 20% or 60% if I feel the smaller/greater volume is better. (For example, I'll probably do a 60% PWC tonight since the ammonia was up around 1 unit this am.) 2. I am using the API FW...

    Cycling with a fish

Hey y'all, I visited here back in January when I got a wild hair to become a fish-owner. That unplanned wild hair turned into 3 5-gallon aquariums, each with a betta fish. They are all still alive (which I attribute more to the hardiness of the fish than to my fishkeeping acumen) and seem...

    Eclipse Hex 5 & Bettas

Photos, as promised! First shot is of the two tanks. I, um... didn't like how the two hex tanks looked on the table, so... um, I... well, ... Iboughtanothertwotanks. :) These are Eclipse Corner 5s and I like them sooooo much more than the hex tanks. They have a hinged lid that makes it really...
