    Lava rock in sump

    Would anyone care to share thier opinions on using lava rock in place of bio-balls in a wet/dry trickle filter for a freshwater aquarium? Your input would be appreciated!

    It as still attatched to the rock. I ripped it off of the rock...stem and all. I will be keeping an eye on the spot it was in to see if it comes back, but I am pretty sure I got all of it...

    More than likely that was where the problem was. I do hope it is solved. Remember, if you ever see that happen again...call them out immediately. Glad it turned out ok thus far!

    Lets see.... Refinish the stand and canopy on the 120 gallon, deep clean/PWC the convict breeder tank, Clean/PWC reef tank, clean/PWC the hex tank, clean/PWC 120 gallon New World Cichlid tank, service all filters, work on sump.... Going to be a busy day!

    I prefer the natural look myself. I use natural rocks, but I do use artificial plants. I just use the artificial plants that look real.

    I believe your tank has cycled. You added bacteria from the old system, which jumpstarted your cycle, IMO. Just remember to religiously clean your canister filter to cut down on nitrate production. Also, you could add some purigen in place of carbon. I run purigen in my tanks and my nitrates...

    I also work in construction. If it were me, I would be ok with putting it upstairs, as long as the floor joists are 2X6 or larger (My house is 2X10). One thing though, I would try to position the tank on an exterior wall. The floor joists tie in to the exterior wall and are strongest at that...
