    Cycling using fish food

If it helps, my plants are pretty fast growing, I've currently got vals in there and am getting some anubias and ferns in there this weekend. The vals grow at lease 2 cm taller everyday. I've also got some elodea (which aren't staying) in there too and they seem alittle greener and bushier at...

    Cycling using fish food

Oh sorry guys I do have plants in the tank! I know alot of people recommend using pure ammonia without a problem but I'm a little hesitant with adding chemicals into my tank, besides the ACE brand is not available in Australia. I'll probably pop in a shrimp. From previous experiences my...

    Cycling using fish food

Its approx. 35 gals, I've been cycling for about a week now adding fish food once evey day. I expected a nitrite spike but nothing has happened, no ammonia and no nitrite. Could it be that maybe I'm not adding enough food? If I add water from an established tank would that do anything?

    DIY Background Question

pH seems normal do I still need to coat the BG? OK, I've soaked my background pieces in water for the last week and a half. The only major changes occured on the first and second day with a high pH spike. After doing several water changes the pH seems to have droped back down to 7-7.2 and has...

Suggestions for types of plants to keep with golds

I'm after any suggestions or recommendations of which types of plants are suitable to keep in a goldfish tank. I know that Anubias and Java Ferns are good choices but I'm after some plants that I can pot in the gravel and won't be eaten by my goldies. Also I know that I'' be limited to the...

Can't believe the fish bag used in lfs and used for so long!

I live in Sydney Australia and every time I've purchased fish they always put it into bags with pre-sealed corners. I'd have to agree that bringing your own container is a better option plus environmentaly friendly.

Advice on which substrate to use on RUGF

With the roots of the plants growing through the plates problem, my idea is to cover it with gardening mesh/fabric to stop the roots from doing so. I have a 2.5ft tank with approx 130gal (probably be less once i install my rock background) with very low/low light, I already have a ehiem canister...

Advice on which substrate to use on RUGF

I've been told by the guy at the LFS that I won't require a Co2 System in my aquarium even though i want to keep live plants. He suggested using reverse undergravel filtration. As this is my first time with live plants I'd like to start out with the basics I know that using the RUGF means that...
