For what it's worth, I completely solved my diatom/brown algae problem with an albino longfin bristlenose pleco, and by adding PhosGuard to the tank filter. My 75 gallon tank had been plagued with brown algae from the start, for over a year. Can't say which one of these had the biggest impact...
Pregnant!
Well well! Turns out not all of my Mollys are female, and the balloon belly was not dropsy, it's pregnancy! I also accidentally figured out a way to make a quick safe place for babies to hide - lettuce leaves float on the surface and make a sort of bowl for the little ones to hide in.
