    My sons first tank

I like it. Hoping to see it in a month or two after the plants fill in. Let him know that it looks good.

Changing over to a new light

I know that you all are trying to help, but I also tend to focus on one thing at a time(really drives my wife nuts at times). Right now, my focus was the light aspect, and the algae aspect will get dealt with in another thread (which will include pictures for aid in id'ing the algae, and it's...

Changing over to a new light

The algae has been there, it's just been a matter of finding the sweet spot to encourage the plants and discourage the algae. For the bulbs, it's exactly that and the color shift. The two together lead to the change in fertilizer and co2 requirements. I didn't mean for it to sound like I was...

Changing over to a new light

Since everyone has latched onto the algae, I have found a major flow issue from my 304 canister. I pulled out my 106 for some added filtration for during alhae cleanup, and that little 106 is moving water better than the 304. Guess it's a good thing that I've got a new 306 coming as well (the...

Changing over to a new light

I'm not going to argue color shift, I tested it about 8-9 years ago and was able to prove it does happen, so that's what I'll stick with. I have the liquid fertilizers and co2(dosing based on testing, drop checker, and fish/plant behavior), but I'm holding the rest of the algae troubleshooting...

Changing over to a new light

The algae, I'm pretty sure, is due to the color shift from the flourescent lamps. The co2 has been kept stable, and the ferts haven't had one missed day in a couple months. My other algae problem is my rather small cleanup crew of 2 amano shrimp and 3 otto's.

Changing over to a new light

I've order a new Fluval Fresh and Plant 2.0(the 48" one) that should be in this week, as well as the wifi controller. This will be replacing my 2 lamp F32T8, where each lamp is running a 4x overdrive over a 55 gallon planted with pressurized co2 and a modified EI fertilizer dosing. The plants...

The most common mistake beginners make is....

That list is a long one. When getting a new plant, I just look it up online to verify if it's a true aquatic, or you could go to a good LFS with knowledgeable staff(which is my preferred route).

The most common mistake beginners make is....

I made the mistake of too much light(2 32 watt T-8 lamps running 4x overdrive)over a 55 when I moved from a 10. I forgot to up the ferts and co2, and algae ensued. It's been several months, and I've almost got everything sorted out. I'm only having to pull excess algae every 2 weeks now, instead...

    Help with algae

Where I'm at now? A bit of luck, combined with upping co2(about double what it was) and ferts to match lighting (those od t8's produce more light than I thought). Still figuring out fert levels to prevent shortages. So far fish and the one amano shrimp are all doing fine. Sent from my SM-G930P...

    Help with algae

Fish are all doing well. I also uppes the ferts to act more like EI with what I have. Ironically, everyone looks to be pearling now, even my anubias nanas. Even the algae on the back wall(don't have any issue with it there) has bubbles forming on it. I'll give it more time and see what that...

    Help with algae

Upped the co2 a little too much. Came in and fish were all sitting near the surface. Turned it down a little, and added an airstone for a few minutes to off gas some of it. They're already back to normal, and the drop checker was lime green. Guess it's too slow on the reaction compared to the...

    Help with algae

Co2 was low. Turned out the drop checker had a thin film of algae on it, making me thinkg all was good, when in reality is wasn't. Never even noticed the algae with the water, but it stood out like a sore thumb once the water was removed for a weekly pwc. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk

    Help with algae

I'm slowly upping the co2 now. I guess I'll use fish behavior as an indicator as to too much. I'm also going to up the fertilizer amounts. Dry ferts are on the shopping list as well as a 406. I doubt that it's a flow issue because it's most prevalent in areas of good flow. When I pulled a lot of...

    Help with algae

I just got over a nice case of GW, to find this algae, that I've never seen before. Parameters as follows. 55 gallon that's been setup for about 2 months now with moneralized dirt topped by flourite. Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate will all sit at 0 ppm unless I dose, and I aim for about 5 to 10...
