Mystery snails outcompeting cory cats for food

Cool- thanks for the advice! Breaking up the wafers is a great idea.

color loss and fuzzy white patches

So far, 2 fish affected. One cardinal tetra, one rummynose tetra. A cardinal tetra was first. It had a loss of color, specifically around the dorsal fin. The area was slightly raised and white-ish. One day later, a rummynose showed problems. It also had a white-ish raised spot right behind...

Mystery snails outcompeting cory cats for food

I have 12 panda corys and 3 golden mystery snails (pomacea diffusa). If I drop in several sinking wafers to feed the cory cats, the snails will immediately make a bee-line for them, from wherever they are in the tank. (Snails are faster than you think!) Problem is, they are eating far more of...

Pairing dwarf gouramis of different color types?

Thanks for the info! I'm lucky enough that my LFS has 3 different color varieties of dwarf gourami, and a bunch of females in the plain-ol-dwarf-gourami tank.

Pairing dwarf gouramis of different color types?

I'd like to get a neon blue or powder blue dwarf gourami and a female companion gourami. I don't intend to breed them, but I do want them to be buddies. Do you think it matters if the female is of the normal, non-special-color type? I'm asking because it seems to be pretty easy to find a...

Increase tetra shoaling behavior by adding larger fish?

I read somewhere that small community fish (mostly tetras) will shoal more tightly / more often if there are larger fish in the tank with them. Is this the case? How much larger would the other fish have to be? Any suggestions? (I'm planning a planted 55 gallon with cardinal tetras...

austin, tx: stocked freshwater 24g nanocube

Price reduced: now $75! That's a heck of a deal. Seriously. I really hope this will go to someone who likes the plants and the fish. They're happy fish in a nice tank. Again- local pickup only (NW Austin, TX).

austin, tx: stocked freshwater 24g nanocube

This is a nice turn-key ready-to-enjoy fish tank. A very well established tank... up and running for over a year. I have a NanoCube 24 DX (24 gallon) tank with a low-height stand that I made myself. I converted the tank for freshwater use by swapping in a slower pump (MaxiJet 600 if I recall...

    Whoa! My panda corys spawned!!

I wasn't even trying to breed them! I was watching the tank last night and in the densely-planted background I saw a fast darting of something the size of a tadpole. I looked very carefuly and saw that there is a baby panda cory cat back there! Whoa!! I don't know how many there are-...

Middle Stratum Swimmers: Neon Tetra vs. Cardinal vs. ???

Just wanted to post for the benefit of the archives that my 9 neons are doing exactly what I hoped they would. They spend a good deal of time front-and-center in the middle stratum. They're great!

Hungry tetras won't eat from surface.

update: they still won't eat from the feeder ring, but I tried putting a few flakes on the surface just outside of the ring and they went NUTS and all smacked at the surface for the food. But they just leave the food in the ring floating there. Stupid fish.

Hungry tetras won't eat from surface.

Thanks for the advice, y'all. I guess I'll just feed the flakes slowly and deliberately. Interestingly enough, I've read that both tetras and cory cats like freeze-dried bloodworms as a treat. Since they float and never sink, though, I can't get any of my fish to eat them! Heh. Oh well.

Hungry tetras won't eat from surface.

I have 11 neon tetras. If I put some flakes in the tank, they will chase after and eat the flakes that sink (before they hit the bottom). They sink pretty fast, though, so 90% of the food ends up on the bottom, uneaten. Not good. So I got a feeder ring in an effort to slow the rate at which...

Can I kill snails with an intentional ammonia spike?

Wow, definitely confirmed about the bridgesii eating the pond snails. At least the dead ones. I squish them against the glass with a stick (sorry little fellas) and 15 minutes later the mystery snail has vacuumed them all up. He sucks one up, pauses for about 3 seconds, then cruises along in...
