Fresh Meat! FOWLR N00b. 1st SW tank

That algae growing is the cycle starting! Justblet it be, and tests probably won't point out anything right now, because alage will consume all the available nitrates and phosphates. If fish are breathing normally, be at ease. If they star breathing super fast or stop eating, that indicates...

    Coral feeding help

Yeah that's what i've always believed, but today i read an article that stated that light helps corals to grow (calcium skeleton) in the day, and at noght they feed from the zooplankton that rises from the bottom when sunlight goes out. Sonce we try to keeo our water as clean as possible, we...

    Coral feeding help

Hi guys, i've read a ton of times of people feeding stuff like reef snow from brightwell, or oyster feast. Doing routines ofbturning off pumps and feeding at night when polyps are extended, also claiming to get super great feeding responses just by dropping some just for corals to "smell this...

Fresh Meat! FOWLR N00b. 1st SW tank

Yeah, there's no such thing as an instant cycling. Everything is a natural or better said, biological process that has to complete on its own time. Leave your ( beautiful ) tank be for a month or two, and monitor by yourself the water parameters, don't take it to your LFS because i've heard of...

Fresh Meat! FOWLR N00b. 1st SW tank

If you had no fish when you tested the water, that would mean you were "ready" to put ONE fish in, eventhough, i wouldn't call1 week cycling to be ready, even using live rock and live sand, because there was nothing to bring ammonia in (fish poo of decomposing matter) Let's all hope everything...

Fresh Meat! FOWLR N00b. 1st SW tank

Jeremy, I cycled my tank for two months before I added my first yellow tang. And he's the happiest fish in may tank so far. Testing my water every week, waiting the day there was zero ammonia, and some nitrates built up, then water change, one turbo, test, waterchange, done? Fish Also on thing...

Fresh Meat! FOWLR N00b. 1st SW tank

Oh sorry, as for your question, i would stop on the livestock, but the next one should definetely be the yellow tang. The mandarin is a very picky eater. Wether you buy on a regular basis some copepods, of you get alot of rock in there and wait for a healthy population of copepods to grow there

Fresh Meat! FOWLR N00b. 1st SW tank

Hi, your tank looks beautiful, really good. The only thing I doubt is if there was too little time to cycle, if i read right, your tank didn't cycle not even for a month, and all the livestock went in at the same time. That sounds like ammonia havok coming to town. Hope that doesn't happen...

    Stocking ideas

Either way, i would add, the same as i did :) , a yellow tang, a couple of clownfish, cleaner shrimp, and maybe a royal gramma. Since you'll be going FOWLR, you could add a racoon butterfly ( wich i think is beautiful) and a flame angelfish, that one adds a lot of color!

    Stocking ideas

I would be careful with the blue and powder blue tang, they are kinda hard on new tanks ( talking with a few loses ) i bought a blue tang, and a powder blue on different stages of my 7 month old tank, around the 5th and 6th month. I believed the tank was starting to be pretty stable, but it was...

Cool new stuff to bring in?

Oh ok, well i would recomend throwing a couple of chromis there! But still 3 weeks seems a short period oftime to be confident that your cycle has ended, if you have tons of algae ( im guessing brown algae or diatoms), maybe your cycle hasn't ended. Is that what's going on?

Cool new stuff to bring in?

You are talking about a clean up crew that you in this point of your tank, don't need yet! Why? Because there is no leftover food for your serpent sea star or nassarius to eat, no algae in your glass for the urchin to eat. So, you will be feeding the tank in order to keep your CUC alive. Just...

Cool new stuff to bring in?

Hi rosseg, i just joined this forum and this is the first theead i read, i have a 10 month old reef, and by my rookie experience i would not recommend putting anything there yet, maybe a couple of chromis maybe to help you build up some beneficial bacteria and go slow on the livestock.
