    oil slick???

I know this thread is a few weeks old, however I thought I would mention a potential cause which was not addressed, did you have your hands in the water and have anything on your hands? lotion of some sort, anything of the such will also sometimes leave behind what appears to be an oil slick if...

    Lighting suggestions

I bought a hagen all in one 10 gallon aquarium kit a while back, and the light is only 15 watts, eventually when I want to start adding corals and a possible anemone, this obviously will not be enough, but I am a bit confused about how to upgrade. It does not appear that the light fixture will...

how to stop your filter from sucking sand?

do they make filter sponges for a marineland penguin 150? or just buy something close and make it fit? Are these sponges another source of filtration that will need changing? or only cleaning? Will this create a nitrate factory eventually like the biowheel?

how to stop your filter from sucking sand?

thanks, sounds like it should work. Just more of a nusiance than anything else, I think it may be because of the sand I got, its caribsea white sand, its very very fine so it gets stirred up easy, I am hoping once my sandbed becomes live it will settle down

how to stop your filter from sucking sand?

I have a penguin 150 filter modified to fit my 10 gallon tank, the intake is about 3" above the sandbed, but my fish keeps making new homes under the rock and kicks sand out like crazy and creates a bit of a sandstorm in the tank, this fine sand then gets sucked into my filter and it jams it and...

dumb question - need an air pump for a powerhead?

Do you need an air pump to hook up to a powerhead for it to work? I am gonna buy a powerhead online for a salt mixing tank and was wondering, stupid question I know heh  oh also what type of dried seaweed would you suggest as a food suppliment for some various snails and hermits if they...

Placement for Powerhead(s) & Bio Wheel Filter

I have the same filter, from what i could tell I believe it has to do with how much water flow and or where you want it to suck the debrie and water from ie bottom only (gate closed) or mid level and bottom level (gate open) or anywhere in between (gate partially open) I stress to you this is...

    Tank Startup

seaham, I added a piece of shrimp last night and still had 0's when tested this morning except for slight nitrate reading, also after feeding the tank little bits of flake with no reading, I started adding quite a bit of flake food last week, and that is when a bit of nitrates were reading...

    Tank Startup

agreed, without this site I would not have known about the fishless cycle, the space requirements for saltwater fish, what to test for, where to start troubleshooting certain problems and tons of other good BASIC info that I had not seen before and certainly not as in depth, I would have been...

    Tank Startup

no water changes yet, planned on doing one tonight and picking up some inverts friday, I threw a half of a small shrimp in last night, with still no ammonia, no nitrites, and pretty much no nitrates when tested this morning, if there was no good bacteria there would have been a spike by now...

    Tank Startup

sounds like a good plan, I will try that, I meant sometimes there is traces of nitrates (NO3), up to 5 mg the most I saw, always getting those two confused
