Hi, Is it a power head, or a HOB Filter ? Well anyway from what you said about it getting hot. Don't use it ! If it gets to hot to hold then be safe and buy a new one. Because you run the risk of a fire. Better off safe than sorry.

Hi, one thing you should do with bubble bars, is soak them for at least 24 hours. I purchased an 8" bubble bar from wal-mart. Soaked it for a day and never had any problems with bare spots .

Yes, I was going to just tack the corners with silicone. that way I can easily remove for cleaning. The reason I came up with this is because I wanna be able to do easier maintenance, and be able to seed new filters for other tanks with it.

Well I was gonna go with my original plan and use the PVC pipe, but tack the scrubbies across the front of it with silicone. leaving a space at the top for the over flow, for when the scrubbie can't pass water through it.
