    Just a few questions...

I get pictures of our fish but it takes a lot of patience. I use a GE 14.1 megapixel camera and it turns out decently most of the time. I just have to sit at the tank for a while (maybe 5 mins) and wait until things calm down or be really fast. The fish have gotten so they know the green light...

    2.5 gallon fry tank?

The problem with substrate in the fry tank, they can burrow into it and get stuck. We had a huge problem with the fry going into the gravel and being unable to get out. We switched to sand and they can't get stuck and die. You could try taking a cartridge and cutting off part of the blue or...

Platy fry refusing to eat now?

That sounds more like he's not getting enough air. Our fry have an air stone in with them along with a heater to keep them from getting too cold and lethargic.

    identification pleeease :-)

Yup platy. We have a few. They're really cool. Yours has a nice color on the tail with the rays being darker.

    Platy fry bent tail?

We had some with bent tails and some that had bent spines (think hunchback). It was a vitamin deficiency that caused it with the fry. We had too many fry and they weren't getting enough vitamins (C I think it was).

Peaceful stock to go with what I have?

We have a golden lyretail guppy that is absolutely gorgeous. He's like nothing we've ever had before and he doesn't bother anything else in our tank.

Whats the best type of canister filter ?

We have the fluval 404 and love it. The output is amazing and creates a really neat current the way we have it set up in our 75. The only downside is that the impeller shaft is really easy to break if you're not careful putting the top on during setup (but we did get it used, so it could just be...

How much longer til I move my fry to the community?

We keep ours separate until they're too big to fit in anyone's mouth anymore. We actually had one that we thought was too big to eat. Turns out one fish tried to eat him and the fry got stuck. Now we wait until they're about an inch long or for sure too big to fit in a mouth (even if someone tries).

    The Art of Platy Seduction

Our platys do that all the time and we usually end up with tons of fry. You definitely do have to watch the number of females to males. We only have 3 males and they're constantly after the females. You'd think they'd get tired of it after a while, but they're still going.

How long does food last before it goes bad?

Smelling it is definitely a great way to tell if it's bad. We buy the small jars of flake food and check it regularly. We used to buy the big jars, but it would always go bad and smell awful. Sometimes it'll start to clump and stick together as well if it gets too much moisture from the air.

When he gets bigger, we're going to turn our 55 into a cichlid tank, and the other fish will be in the 75.

Thanks for the info, after doing a bit of reading on the species this should be a nice fish for me. I'll try to keep this thread updated with new pics as it grows.

Kind of what I figured. At first I was thinking Convict then in the car there was an angle that it looked like a Ram, after consideration of what the store had I'm betting some african type, kicking myself for not asking what tank it was caught out of.

    Identi-fry

The PetSmart near me adopts out fry because they can't officially know what they are to sell them. Mostly they are various types of Platy with some Mollies and Guppies, but tonight there was something different. Any ideas as to what this 1/4 inch long cichlid is?:thanks:
