They CAN LIVE without salt.
It has come to my conclusion (not true probably) that the "salt requirement" is a method to earn money in a "decent" reason for why to use it.
You probably have more experience than the pet store. I don't use salt in my tank, especially with the fact that it has...
I would use a Whisper air pump. More reliable, even my super old one that looked like a gray box with a black base.
(oh, and that old airpump was tossed, it died in a storm.)
A prefilter on the intake (foam, sponge, empty media bag, etc) will help with that. As for the ammonia spike, that's the betta death.
I never had that tank before, but sorry for the loss.
