So, I'm not sure if I want to change this and could use a nudge in the right direction. Alkalinity prevents pH swings and I test for this when I check for KH. My tanks water stays around 8 dKH with a 7.0 pH. When I test for GH it is almost always off the charts hard water (think > 500 ppm)...

Interesting post. Rena is sounding very good. I have the EHEIM 2232 Ecco and have a1/2 inch inline heater with no problems. Easy to clean the flow rate is ruffly 127 GPH, the 2234 ≈ 143 GPH, 2236 ≈ GPH.
