Hey,
I'm brand new to all this as well and I've had a similar situation to yours. Check my posts out for my story (under freshwater - unhealthy fish section).
I had lots of different stories told to me too... but the most imperative thing I discovered is to "cycle" your tank.
What did the...
I know it depends on the personalities of the betta too... but any/all thoughts and experiences appreciated.
I've currently got a betta in a 28litre tank by himself. Fantastic water quality (or so the tests tell me)... waiting on some persistent fin rot to go away before I give him some...
Ok what I've done is gotten a silk-like plant that has leaves up near the surface of the tank.
I've got him on a 7 day course of melafix
Everything is still normal.... I think I see some clear regrowth but am not too sure....
But today he's suddenly really skittish. Comes out when I put...
It's about 7.5 gallons (28 litres).
I haven't noticed any clear growth yet.
I'll buy some pellets - I think he'd eat anything I give him... He practically eats from my finger!
It's exciting and a relief that my tank is cycled. Means once he's recovered I can think about more fish!
Just tested my water again - two nights after the 50% water change:
Temp: 26 degrees celcius - I'm going to increase it to 27 degrees.
pH: 6.6 - getting a little acidic now
Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: nearly 0
His fins are still quite straggly. No better, no worse. It's only been a few...
Ooops I read the results wrong.... note to self - don't do it at 6:30am in a rush before leaving for work!
pH - still 6.8
Ammonia - still basically zero (test has a very slight greeny tinge but is still really yellow)
Nitrite - I would say about 0.25
Nitrate - 5.0
I am doing a 50% water change...
Just received my API freshwater testing kit.
Details as follows:
pH: 6.9 (nearly 7)
ammonia: nearly 0 - mostly yellow with a very very slight green tinge
nitrate: 5.0
nitrite: halfway between 25-50
doesn't seem like the water is extremely bad, just a bit of tweaking...
Betta hasn't improved...
It is 24 hours since the 50% water change and meds put in. He looks a bit worse, his fins are pretty wilted, he looks more like a female betta at the moment.
Still waiting on the kit to test the water...
As he is the only fish in the tank, do you think it would be a good idea to turn off the...
Aww thanks!
No I didn't even have the chance to put the sulfa in yet so it wasn't that.... it was already too late - when I got home from work he was already gone. I knew he wasn't well cos he wasn't moving around much anymore - just hiding in his castle... but I was hoping he'd pull through...
Update: got home and my golden sucking catfish is dead. *sniff*. He was from my first lot too :-(
Now am in middle of first 50% water change..... we'll see how my betta goes...
