Description: CPR markets the BakPak too reef owners with smaller reef aquariums or situations that an in-sump skimmer would not work or is too much hassle to set up. On the guise of being a reliable skimmer the BakPak 2 does a nice job but here are some pro's and con's when looking at the skimmer overall.

The BakPak skims a ton of skimmate and stays in tune very well. CPR recommends when setting up the skimmer to adjust the air control knob to maximum and doing so results in lots of micro-bubbles and a good level of skimming. I find the CPR filled with nice skimmate about every other day so overall it does a good job on that front.

The bio-bale media does a good job of maintaining a healthy biological filter.

The skimmer is very easy to set up, it easily hangs on the back of the tank and the powerhead works well as a water pump in this instance. My skimmer is equipped with a Maxi-Jet 1200 and accomplishes good flow rates.

It is easy to disassemble and clean and does not requires near the level of maintenance as more complicated protien skimmers.

It is made of high quality acrylic and is backed by excellent support via CPR. I had a problem with my skimmer not creating sufficient micro-bubbles and CPR was able to resolve the problem quickly giving me a great level of attention.

This skimmer is loud! It buzzes and makes lots of noises on and off, but overall is just loud all of time. It needs to be unhooked if you are trying to do something that requires little noise in the room the skimmer is being used it.

The Maxi Jet 1200 needs cleaned often to free it of debris and sometimes just does not create the level of micro bubbles needed to power the skimmer.

The break in period on this skimmer is long and it will skim light colored skimmate for a period of time before doing a nice job.

It is a large skimmer that takes up a lot of vertical as well as horizontal space.

The bio bale media will cause an initial nitrate spike although you can buy this skimmer in a "Reef Ready" model that does not contain the media.

Overall Score: 3.5/5

Basically I would recommend the CPR BakPak 2 too any aquarium owner who wants a simple, efficient skimmer.

Pros: Easy setup and instilation, small in aquarium view compared to some skimmers
Cons: Return line designed to close to water level IMO

This skimmer is easy to setup and run and produces great results. It is a good skimmer for a beginner which is where I am in my saltwater experience.

My only issue is that I had bubbles in the tank. Not micro, big bubbles. I placed a little piece of sponge from an HOB filter in the return line. Not only did the bubbles dissapear but the sound cuts way down.

Pros: Again easy to setup and clean.
Cons: Return line to high and micro bubbles in the tank.

Over all not a bad buy, as long as you buy it at a discount.
I will say it does a great job on keeping the tank clean. My Nitates have been near 0 since I got it.
