Pros: Flow rate (500gph), quiet, media customability, reliability, cost.
Cons: Neglecting regular maintenance can cause clogging and water overflow. Mucky impellers/impeller-wells may cause the filter to fail to restart after a power-interruption.

What can I say...I love the AquaClear line of filters (I currently have 28 in operation, from minis to 500s). These filters are workhorses, and will, with regular maintenance, give you years of dependable service.

Probably my favourite two features of this product are flow-rate and the ability to almost infinitely customise the media. Flow rate is adjustable, from a minimum of 166 gph all the way up to a stunning 500 gph. The media basket is just that...a basket into which you can choose to put any combination of the supplied Hagen media (sponge, bio-media, carbon), or any other media that suits your needs (I have even seen an AquaClear 500 being used as a refugium for a small reef tank).

AquaClears are also extremely dependable, and the only problems I hear from people with them are cause by improper/infrequent owner maintenance. In order to provide you with the performance that has made this filter an industry legend, you must regularly (typically every 1-3 weeks) rinse your filter media and clean the impeller and impeller well....failure to do so can result in clogged media, which will cause water to leak from the filter-box top, or failure of the motor to automatically restart if there is a power interruption.

The AquaClear 500 is backed with a 2 year warranty, and is quite modular, with replacement parts easy to come by.

Pros: Rated 500 GPH, media
Cons: non

Nice filter system. I paid to much for mine at PetSmart. You can buy them online for 35.00. This is a great system.
