Description: OK, everyone has heard of Marineland's breakthrough with the BIO-WHEEL filters. Many people use this type of filte for fresh water and marine applications.

Just when we thought it couldn't get any better Marineland has out done themselves once again with the Millennium series filters.

The BioWheel filters worked by passing water over a wheel that spun. The idea behind this is to get nitrifying bacteria to grow on the wheel and the reason the wheel would spin is to get important oxygen to the bacteria to promote growth. And everyone has experience the dreaded stuck bio wheel and we have to go out and buy another or try to fix the one we have.

Well all of these moving parts are gone in the Millennium Series filters. Instead of the coveted "BIOWHEEL" Marineland developed the "BIOGRID" system. All it is, is a plastic piece that slides into the filter fully submerged except for handles used to pull out the BIOGRID. The Biogrid has hundreds of "fins" for the bacteria to grow on and they way these fins are situated makes sure that water runs over the entire BIOGRID and not leaving any dead spots.

How it all works:
The water is drawn up the pick-up tube and is passed over the BIOGRID where nitrifying bacteria grow there is also a flip up air intake to allow air to pass over the biogrid, this is Biological Filtration. When the water passes the grid it then meets one of Marineland's Black Diamond Filters. The filter media is very fine and filters out any debris the filter picks up, mechanical filtration. When the water passes through the filter it also passes through a wall of Marineland's famous Black Diamond activated carbon and this is Chemical Filtration.

The Millennium is avaliable in many capacities from 85 GPH to 280 gph. They make two filters with 85 GPH one includes the BioGrid and one doesn't.

Good filtration for aquariums up to 140 gallons with a single filter.

Pros: Great filtration, silent operation, shut off valves
Cons: Not one problem yet!

This is a very good filter- I purchased this for my 20 gallon fw tank that is heavily stocked with live plants and fish. I have gone through 4 filters, Marineland 200, Rena XP1, Tetratec model and an Eheim Ecco, before I purchased this one.
This is the best power filter I have come across. It is superior to the Bio wheel since the Millenium uses a bio grid inside the filter itself to colonize bacteria that break down the wastes of the aquarium. The advantage of this is that it never stops- unlike the bio wheel, which has a tendency to stop moving, thus killing the nitrifying bacteria.
After the aquarium water hits the bio grid, it is filtered by the foam and then by carbon before returing to your tank. Thus, the water comes out very clear- no odors whatsoever.
The Millenium 300 is a very affordable filter for its price and sterling quality it returns to your pets.
