Pros: Attractive casing, plenty of room inside the filter, quiet, inexpensive (including media)
Cons: None found

I've owned this filter for about 4 months on an 8g tank. I first started with sand, and now use aquatic soil. The filter in stock form cleared most of the cloudiness of substrate changes within a few hours. The motor assembly is well sealed and I've not had any problems with foreign objects impeding the impeller.

The inside of the filter is roomy, and I found following TankGirl's suggestion of using a lot of filter floss instead of carbon beneficial for my system. While Penn-Plax's replacements are cheap, I've prefered using bulk poly-fiber filter floss for the past 2 1/2 months. I've not had problems with water clarity or smells without carbon.

Maintenence is trouble-free, and the entire unit is easily assembeled and disassembeled. I have no problems with noise as long as the water level is above the bottom of the "bio-falls" assembly.

I've had an AquaClear 200gph HOB on another tank for some time, and, not including filtration rate, find it no better or worse than this unit. Penn-Plax appears to be a young company with low prices, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of their other filters. In addition, guests regularly comment on the attractive exterior when seeing the filter for the first time.

Pros: The motor is very quiet and the flow to the tank is smooth, it does not splash.
Cons: none that I have noticed.

I purchased this product for my 10 gallon quarantine tank. So far it is working very well. Unlike the older bio-wheel filter I had, this product does not splash water on top of my tank or tank hood. It's very quiet and seems to work very well.
