Fresh or salt water for the rocks, if it is salt water they likely will be okay but if it fresh I would check the parameters of your aquarium every two day to make sure they don't change that much, that being said I think they might be some kind of calcium based rock.

I would cut some elbow PVC pipe in half and place it up against the glass, that way they will have a place to live where you can see them. At the same time i would do what BigRedsReef 10 and pull out half of the sand and try and bury the rock all the way down to the glass.

Ya, if you do go with the ABF you should put in some cover for the guy to hide under so that he doesn't jump out of the aquarium. If this is an open top aquarium i would go with some water lettuce or water hyacinth, if you like the look of ground plants then go with some water lillys.
