    Questions- general info.

I siphon every one to two weeks when doing PWC, and try to focus on different parts of the gravel each time so I don't wipe out all of the BB in the gravel at one time. There is very little open area on my cover, so I don't have much evaporation, plus I keep the water level up to the black...

    Nitrates need to die!

It sounds like you are over stocked. All the fish waste is ammonia, which is converted to nitrite and then nitrate. Is your aquarium planted? Plants help to take up some of the nitrates. That is a lot of fish for a 75 gal. I have a total of 11 rainbow fish at about an inch each, 4 goldfish...

    Buying Carbon Question

Here's the link for the site I was referring to: Aquarium Chemical Filtration: Foster and Smith Premium Pelleted Carbon It's actually on sale now at 4.3L for $17.49. Not sure what that works out to per pound. Based on the Q&A the 4.3L bag is about 5 lbs so it would be about $3.50 a pound...

    API KH and GH Kit

I have low kH too. I was looking for a way to increase kH without increasing pH. How much does crushed coral in the filter add to the pH?

    Buying Carbon Question

I've purchased it from Dr. Foster's and Smith when they were having a 20% off and free shipping sale. If you sign up to receive their e-mails, keep an eye out for their sales and I've found it's the cheapest.

    API KH and GH Kit

The starting color after the first drop should be a light bluish for kH. If it changes to yellow after the first drop, that means you have a very low kH. it sounds like your kH is so low that you never see the blue so you don't have any change in color to observe.

    Rainbowfish Sex Ratios

Sounds good. I think the aqadvisor tool is really helpful, but it does have some limitations. Which type of red rainbowfish do you have? The red irian rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus)? If you change the size of them to juveniles, around 2-3" it should definitely help bring down the percent...

    Rainbowfish Sex Ratios

Usually rainbowfish are recommended to be kept in groups of at least 6+, preferably 7+ in order to keep them happy and allow for a school to form. I have 7 bosemani rainbows and currently 4 dwarf neon rainbows (I had 7, but one died 2 days after getting him and the other 2 died at the start of...

    Plant identification help

I can't comment on the hydro, but I have wisteria in my tank and it grows fast! Very easy to grow and when trimming, you can plant the trimmed tops in your substrate to get a new stem. Just make sure to trim the leaves off the bottom before planting it.

Hi I'm a new member seeking goldfish advice

Sounds like you are doing a good job treating her so far. I had ick show up in my tank after adding a few fish from the LFS:facepalm: I did the same 1 tablespoon per 5 gal, and I increased my water temp to 87 degrees. I currently have 4 goldfish mixed in (until it gets warmer outside, then...

    Ph

I have read that some of the ph regulators are not safe for planted aquariums. Make sure to read the fine print on those products and they are ok to add to a planted tank. Driftwood helps to slightly lower ph, but it may also stain your water a little if not pre-boiled.

    Need help !

I though plecos were sensitive to most ick treatments? If the plecos aren't showing any signs of ick, and if the discus didn't show any signs of ick, I wouldn't be treating the whole tank for ick because of the harsh medication, especially for plecos. What were the water parameters? Didn't...

    Losing algae battle

Glad to hear the nerites are doing a great job! Currently I have 6 or 7 assassin snails, but I love the look of the tiger nerites. I have a very small amount of algae I'm trying to get rid of sooner rather than later since I'm looking to get a co2 setup later rather than sooner. Does anyone...

    High nitrates

Good point - I believe it says in the instructions clearly "MUST shake bottle #2 vigorously for 1 full minute immediately prior to adding drops. Then shake vial vigorously for 1 full minute before waiting 5 minutes to read results." Or something along those lines. But to answer the question -...

    High nitrates

What type of test kit are you using? It's really odd after a 50% pwc your nitrates aren't any lower if your tap water is at 0. Might it be an error with the test?

    LED-what level of light? High/med?

Thanks for the info!! It's been hard to find anything that really spells out levels of lighting with LED lights. Custom LEDs are easier to classify because you can customize the setup and know exactly what the total output is... Pre-constructed is more difficult, especially when on the...

    LED-what level of light? High/med?

I am not new to keeping fish, but was out of the game for awhile (ex-wife didn't approve... ). Now I have gotten my 75 gal my kids love (7, 5 and 3) and want to do things right. I bought the ecoxotic E-120 48inch full spectrum LED. Is this considered high light?, medium light? What? From...

    New to planting

Big +1 there. I had it as a kid (half black half blue) and now I slightly cringe when seeing people buy it unless it's for a small beta tank or something like that. I'm a fan of the dark substrates that help to show off the natural colors of the fish. But having 3 kids myself I wouldn't...

Buy decor for new 30gal tank.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Fosters and Smith. Their drift wood/mopani wood seems very fairly priced, shipping is fast and their customer service has been helpful whenever I called.

    New to planting

Definitely agree. Plus in the summer it can heat the tank to unhealthy levels, reducing amount of O2 available to the fish. Tank looks good with the upgraded substrate! I don't have much experience with fluorescent lighting, but I'm pretty sure almost any replacement bulb from a pet store...
