    New plastic plants prep?

Bought some new plastic plants for my new 55g African cichlid tank setup, which is currently cycling (no fish). Do I need to do anything to the plants to prep them before they go in beyond a thorough rinse with water? I’ve seen some instances (in reviews) that some brands of plants gave off...

    Is this Brown Algae?

I have a 29 gallon Lake Tanganyika tank with N. Brichardi Cichlids. Is this brown algae? If so, how do I get rid of it properly? Does it mean something’s wrong with my water??

Help! Drip Acclimation for shipped fish??

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain that. I was actually losing sleep over it the night before last, and was torn on what to do. So yesterday morning I did a 50% water change on the tank, using no pH buffer. After doing so, I tested after the tank settled back down and I’m down to...

Help! Drip Acclimation for shipped fish??

I just ordered some fish (n. Brichardi) online and opted for overnight shipping. The seller said they keep their pH around 7.8. My new tank (no fish in there yet) I set up for Lake Tanganyika with a pH of 8.6-8.8. I heard that the chemical changes from a long time in the bag can be very toxic...

    Lake Tanganyika Setup

First, let me say that I am so unbelievably happy to be back on this forum after 13 years!! Yup you read that right! This forum helped me along on all my past tanks. I’ve since rekindled my passion (and multiple tank syndrome lol) and starting a tank for me, I mean my kids :))) In the process...

    I have FRY!

Well, my n. brichardi do! The other day I was saying to my g/f, "i've had these guys for 3 months and no breeding". After everyone has told me about how these particularly breed "like rabbits". This morning I woke up and looked into the tank and i saw all this "white stuff" floating around, and...

Vivarium/Paludarium set up- How is this?

Vivarium/Paludarium set up- How is this?

would the fluval 2 be over-kill though? i 'm sure i can arrange the waterfall so it will fit

Vivarium/Paludarium set up- How is this?

As far as a filter for the waterfall (around 10-11" high) goes... Would i be ok with the Fluval 1, which is rated at 50gph? or do i need to go with the Fluval 2 (105gph)? The fluval 2 is much larger, but has flow control. The fluval 1 doesn't.. .I'm sure i'll be able to hide the fluval 2, but...

    sand substrate question

I agree... pool filter sand.. the all-purpose they sell at lowes is filthy and requires a lot of cleaning. Besides you can get a really nice light colored PFS

    setting up a 29 gallon freshwater w/sand

I have a 29g with a HOB and pool filter sand. I heard that depending on the type of sand you use, some sink faster than others. PFS in this case is fine, it sinks pretty fast before being sucked up when rustled. It is also important to turn off your filter during maintenance.

Vivarium/Paludarium set up- How is this?

would the tank be suitable for newts. i kinda think they're cute

Vivarium/Paludarium set up- How is this?

That rock pile all the way to the right in the last drawing is going to be more of a sloped pile rather than steps. Would that be ok? Are newts ok climbers? I'm leaning a bit more towards newts because i heard they require a bit less maintenance. If i do decide to go with some FBT's, there's...

Vivarium/Paludarium set up- How is this?

thanks for the comments! :D I'm actually not quite sure what i want to put in there... I have some harlequin rasporas, and three cories from the current tank that i'm moving to a 10g.. I'm not sure i want to put them in the paludarium. I was going to leave them in the 10g and put something...

Help! Problems w/algae and poor growth

would a few oto's aid in getting rid of some of the algae? there seems to be 2 types, an algae that looks like the rolled up thread that you see in the pictures, and little patches that look like hair that grow about 1/4 inch. I will try dosing the Flourish and then the excel any other suggestions?

Help! Problems w/algae and poor growth

Ok, just before I hastily tore down my planted tank, I figured I would take some pics of my tank and get some help. The tank is a 20g high, Eco-complete substrate, AC30 (i think) filter, co2 system (not pressurized), 28w in T5's from Coralife fixture and i dose twice a week with Kent...

How am I doing so far??? (some flashing/GH problems)

If it is ick, i was told raising the temp a bit and adding some aquarium salt will help. is this something you'd suggest? I also heard that it could be territorial behavior? are my parameters ok? any suggestions about the GH or is it fine like it is... i was told the brichardi are pretty hardy...

How am I doing so far??? (some flashing/GH problems)

I'm new to cichlids and have my first tank is a 29g with 4 n. brichardi. They seem to be doing quite well. One is flashing a bit (once in a great while), so i decided to test the water. Im having trouble keeping my GH up. Each water change I add 1/4tsp of baking soda and 1 table spoon of Epsom...
