    Fishless cycle going nowhere

Yay! that is exciting! Who said this hobby didn't require patience?! Totally on the right track. Have you read this post? It's gold. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f15/the-almost-complete-guide-and-faq-to-fishless-cycling-148283.html

    mold? Smell?

Thanks guys! Yeah, I think someone said I should buy distilled to cut my water with. I was buying spring, but it just kept creeping back up to 8.2 no matter what I did! It's a small tank, so I won't mind buying water. So it's okay for that stuff to get scrubbed off and into the water? I...

    mold? Smell?

Hi! I have a few pics to show what I am wondering is mold or not. The tank water is low now (too complicated to get into at the moment) and at one point some of the black spots were not covered in water. Does mold grow when submersed, or just wet? Is there any way to know what is is by watching...

    Stranger plant danger

strange. When it gets a little bigger, maybe post pics in the "planted aquarium" section, folks there may be able to identify!

    Fishless cycle going nowhere

not too sure about this: but perhaps starting out at 4ppm with no seeding material is too high? You should also try tiny amounts of crushed fish food, it will help add nutrients to the tank... less sterile of an environment. Don't bother testing anything other than the ammo until you see it...

    Keeping Baby Fish

can you use a small net and rest it near the top of the tank? like a fry box?

    DIY 5 gallon hood?

5 gallons is a happy tank for a betta. You can lower the water level and there is still plenty of swim space! :)

    Something to consider...seriously.

I imagine a very lightly sanded tank is similar to BB but with the "softer" look. I changed out my gravel for pool filter sand, but then was worried it was raising the PH (it wasn't) and took it out. I left a light scattering, and you can just swirl it around a little (I have a small 5 gall and...

    Betta fish sex?

Well I know that male bettas will have have long fins and female bettas will have shorter fins and females are smaller usually. But my last female was big! The most sure way to tell is if they have an "egg spot". But the most important part here is, you can't just throw 2 bettas in together and...

    Stranger plant danger

Why not put it in a separate container for now and see what it turns into? Maybe someone could identify now, but it will only get easier to identify when more mature.

    Fishless cycle going nowhere

warmer water couldn't hurt, but not sure it's going to be the difference you need. Maybe someone else can chime in, but in the time it takes to cycle the tank, maybe any potential cooties from the pet store will not be a concern. For instance, velvet needs a live host or dies in 2 weeks (If I...

    Fishless cycle going nowhere

it would go faster if you can get score some filter media from an established tank. That will help "seed" your tank. I have a local fish store guy I trust, and he gave me a huge gross wad of filter floss and it really helped with my fishless cycle. Also, I only caught a nitrite reading ONCE a...

    lingering PH questions

Thanks. I had a week of fish death, but I am just starting up and it was week ONE. I acclimated them slowly (about 6 hours) because it was going from 7 to over 8 and I had read that a jump in PH that big is dangerous in too short period of time. I just want it to be stable and start over with...

    lingering PH questions

Hi all! After reading everything I can about PH, I still have some questions. Here is what I gather, please correct me where I may be wrong: 1)Better to have not ideal PH and be stable, then it to fluctuate in attempt to make it ideal. 2) if my water is hard, even things like peat may not...

Dog will not stop looking at fishtank.

maybe add a scat mat in the front? They use them for cats to keep away from christmas trees and stuff. or what about a fireplace guard thing?? and this is pretty cute (even though frustrating, I'm sure!) Post a pic!

    best sand

Hmmm, I think I may have been to quick to blame the PFS, I just did a half hour experiment and saw the water creeps up with or without the sand...

    best sand

Hi guys. Just came across this trying to do some research. Everything I had read about PFS is that it would have no effect on my water... I went to Leslies poll, got a big bag, and changed out my gravel. Well, don't you know, my ph kept creeping up. I did a little test in a vase with a scoop of...

a dying fish: what to do?

He died not long after my post. 5 gallon was uninhabited during cycle, then I added my baby betta for 2 days, took her out and added 3 hasbrosus dwarf corys and 3 celestial pearls, then added the betta back in. Water is about 70, (lower edge of their parameters) using API liquid test: PH is...

a dying fish: what to do?

Update: put him in a jar with tank water suspended in tank (to stay warm) but no water exchange. I think he is mostly dead and I didn't want to risk my other fish holding out hope... but maybe I will wake up to a magically alive fish in a jar. I wasn't sure if he died, how quickly he would...

    DEATH: corydoras hasbosus or pygmaeus?

Thank you again Autumn Sky. You are proving to be a valuable advisor! :) And now we have a conversation up about my CPDs too. I got them from the same place. Fairly reputable (and expensive!) fish store in Greenwich, CT, about 40 minutes from me. I know they will replace it for me when/if they...

    Celestial Pearl Danios / CPD

Thanks! We got a pretty brave bunch I think. I got a lot of fake plant coverage for now, while I hope the Java fern begins to grow... and as I can afford it, I'll keep adding more live plants. They do come out even when we are looking in or my daughter slides her finger across the glass. Of...

    DEATH: corydoras hasbosus or pygmaeus?

Thanks you so much for such detailed info! I just read that fluctuations of .3 in PH in less than 24hrs can be lethal to fish. I'm going to assume that the cory who died just couldn't adjust. As for heavy metals, I asked my husband who seems to recall we got it tested and only were told we had...

    DEATH: corydoras hasbosus or pygmaeus?

Oh, reading that has made me feel better. I have had significant luck with bettas, but I know they are pretty hearty, and I have never had a cycled tank before. Another question while I have you all: how important is a water conditioner if I am using a mix of spring bottled water and my well...
