Do I need a flipper for a freshwater tank?

Had to google "flipper". LOL. Personally I use a sponge on a stick. I have talked to people who like the magnetic cleaners.

    Fluval Spec V questions???

I started out with a Fluval tank for a Betta and got rid of it... The filter design is such that the intakes is high (and permanent) and some Bettas will use the suction to sleep there near the surface and rip their fins. The design might work for many fish but not Bettas.

Aqueon 55 gal L.E.D Start Kit GOOD or BAD?

I see online PetSmart has a 55 gallon starter kit for 149.00. (Top fin) & the heater is adjustable. I don't know much about it but the price looks good. I am using a NeoTherm heater (pricey) and a HOB (hang on back - Aquaclear). Made a lid with acrylic from the hardware store. It's easy to...

Aqueon 55 gal L.E.D Start Kit GOOD or BAD?

It depends. I went and looked at it but no price was listed. The tank itself is usually not expensive but the goodies can add up. The filter they include retails for around 40 bucks at PetSmart. That filter wouldn't be my first choice but it looks OK. The heater they say is "preset". I...

    Betta tankmates

My experience has been it is up to the Betta... My current Betta is fine with 3 Albino Cories and 4 Mystery Snails but is pretty sure Neons are intruders.

Filter died and just some questions

The heater is a pretty big deal. They can live without a light.

    Bacterial bloom help

I am using an Aquaclear 20 filter (different brand) and can use any filter media. I am unsure if your filter is similar? I do know if the flow is slowing the filter is clogging and being less efficient. For me that would mean cleaning time and rinsing the media out in aquarium water from a...

    Bacterial bloom help

I had a similar problem for a while when I mucked things around. I added a small relatively inexpensive UV sterilizer and it did the trick for me. Let's see what other advice comes in?

Clarifications on That Really Good Cycling Thread

I too have a 10 gallon Betta tank. I ended up (after several tries) with an AquaClear 20 filter that hangs on the back of the tank making it easy to maintain. The current IS too strong for the Betta so I Hung a small strip of clear acrylic an inch into the water in front of the water fall to...

    Cory food

I had purchased shrimp pellets by Wardley and the Corys liked them. When I bought Invertebrate Pellets from Aquatic Arts for my snails the Corys went nuts. They are wild about it and mostly ignore the shrimp pellets.

    Petrified Wood?

In olden times we used to put a few drops of vinegar on a found rock and if it fizzed rejected it. If it didn't we rinsed it well and put it in the tank. I still do so and have not had any problems.

    Gravel Vacumn no water change

Love seeing what you have done. I just have a small 10 gallon and given my age and health it will stay that way. :thanks:

    Heater placement

I have a ten gallon Betta tank and also agonized a bit over filter and heater placement. What I have found is that with water circulation it hasn't mattered that much. Every Betta I have kept has been a bit different in personality. Some are more aggressive than others. I currently just have...

    Gravel Vacumn no water change

Darn tootin I need some brain interaction! Thanks. Took out an undergravel filter because they are made so cheaply these days... Making one myself would be the only way.

What do you feed your snails

I bought some special sinking snail pellets from Aquatic Arts. My mystery snails LOVE them as do the cory catfish and even the Betta.... I also drop in on occasion very tiny slices of canned green beans rinsed well.

    Snails- what kind?

I found an online source called "Aquatic Arts" and mail ordered 3 mystery snails in different colors. They are still quarter size and smaller but they are delightful to watch. They definitely help with algae but for me they are mostly entertainment. My Betta mostly leaves them alone...

    Gravel Vacumn no water change

Thanks for the reply. The power heads come in different sizes so I may give it a try. It is only a ten gallon tanks so I can't clean very well on one water change. :thanks:

    conditioner

My take on it? Water conditioner is a generic term. Let's assume we are talking about a complete conditioner that neutralizes chloramines, heavy metals and binds ammonia, nitrite and nitrate into forms a bio filter can remove. The manufacturer of Prime recommends it for new water and...

Help!! Maintain tank heat in cold basement apartment

Perhaps you have a course of action by now? I thought I would chime in as my little house gets very cold in the winter and I have a ten gallon. A lid is an absolute must. Acrylic sheeting is very easy to score and snap just like you would cut glass. You will need to lightly sand the edges...
