    Depressing

Man I don't even mess with breeder boxes or anything like that and I have a very high fry survival rate. My tanks are heavily planted and have prefilters though. Plenty of places to hide. One of my guppies just gave birth last night so I have like30- 50 little buggers. Wasn't expecting such...

    betta

Heated tank is important, maybe 76-81 ish, I'd do 78 or 79 for a male. Filtration is important but you also want very calm water for a happier betta. Don't know what kind of filter you have but sponge filters are usually best. You can feed 2 times a day when it's an adult if you want, just a...

    No cycling puzzle

Yeah that's weird... have you tested your tap water? That would help. And like mentioned are you continuously feeding the bacteria with ammonia or at least food or something? Your 10ppm nitrates are probably from the tap and if you have .5ppm ammonia, it should be broken down into a...

    Classroom Tank Advice Needed

Keep the water in pristine condition. Aquarium salt may help, at least to reduce the risk of infection. There are products that may help with trauma. Best way to get help is to do your own research. Many google searches will turn up great threads from some of these forums that are otherwise...

Tank still won't cycle! Add more fish?

I've never received bad advice like that from forums or research but a family friend told me to dump a bunch of danios in and then sell them when the cycle was complete [emoji19]. Obviously I did no such thing. I personally don't mind the long process of fish in cycleing. Gives me time to...

    Hair Algae

A week old tank, give it some time. It's not uncommon for young tanks to go through some algae issues. If it's getting worse, and fast, reduce lighting and ferts. I understand you're using some kind of nutrient rich substrate under gravel?? If so that may be a potential source of...

Tank still won't cycle! Add more fish?

I'm so glad to hear that no one is attacking you for fish in cycling. You seem to be doing it responsibly and like you know what you're doing. I've been relentlessly and aggressively attacked for my decisions to do fish in cycles. Fish in cycles do take time. My current 29gallon tank took...

What kind of Snail is this?

Assassin snails are also really cool looking. Beautiful black and yellow conical shells. They also eat dead fish very quickly in case you don't catch it. They can really "get up in there" and eat the insides before it causes water quality issues. I tend to leave the leftover scales and skin...

    Classroom Tank Advice Needed

As for keeping tank mates, given that this is a classroom and not a home, I would say don't do it. Normally I would say maybe depending on the fish but given the classroom and lack of experience (no offense,) I would strongly recommend keeping the betta alone..with maybe some cool snails...

    betta tank too big?

The claim that says bettas live in "puddles" and such is inaccurate. Yes, they are found in very shallow waters, but usually by chance, like during dry spells for example. They are notorious jumpers, because they have adapted to escape these situations. I would think that a tank could only be...

    Hi Everyone!

They love the logs! I also had the sinking log [emoji106] that he loved when he felt like being at the bottom. Agreed on the ten being slightly small for the BN. Although it may "suffice" with just the betta, I also put the comfort of fish foremost. I wouldn't say they get FAR too large...

    Suggestions for flake food

Again, frozen brine is nowhere near enough. That has basically no nutritional value. The above statement is correct, I didn't realize they were talking about frozen brine. Go for flake food, and get freeze dried cubes of brine shrimp as treats. You could even use the brine as the staple if...

    Suggestions for flake food

I like Omega One. I believe it to be a premium brand. I use the flake food as the staple diet, and freeze dried blood worms, and brine shrimp to supplement and as a treat because they seriously LOVE it, especially the brine shrimp. But yes, I believe flake food is the way to go generally...

    Hi Everyone!

If Bernie is rather docile, maybe try a BN pleco...maybe. It may be too big, posing a threat to Bernie. Do some google searches to see others experiences. But yeah, generally speaking bettas should be kept alone, besides [emoji222]! Again, use your judgement and keep a careful eye if you add...

    Hi Everyone!

Probably just reiterating things you already know [emoji851]. Good to see responsible fish owners who research as much as possible. You're right, ottos are probably not the best idea for a ten gallon, though they are amazing fish! They also "need" to be in a shoal of at least 6. They also...

    Hi Everyone!

My Anubias plants are thriving PARTIALLY rooted in sand. Keeps them down perfectly and the little bit of roots exposed are hidden by plants in front of it.

about adding algae eaters . .

What kind of algae eaters were you planning to add? It does matter. Haha

about adding algae eaters . .

Agreed. Corys love to feel comfortable with a decent shoal of at least 6. They will explore more, and be less startled when walking around/making noise, etc. They DO NOT eat algae. I believe they eat a bit of detritus. They are a decent clean up crew but be sure to feed them their own food...

    Gravel or sand?

Nahhh, unless your intake is literally resting on the sand bed in which case I would wonder why that is....or MAYBE if you're using play sand or something of the like. Most PFS and aquarium sand sold in LFS's won't be a problem unless you have really insane water turbulence throughout the water...

    Gravel or sand?

Yes. Cories don't know any better[emoji53]...they will dig until their barbells are scraped off/damaged at which point infection is the biggest concern I believe.

    Gravel or sand?

Interesting, even though I have heard of success keeping corries on gravel, my first time keeping corries was disastrous with gravel. I'm promising you though, you'll see a significant difference in their behavior on sand.

Have you ever tried sand or are you just going off of your "google searches?" [emoji23] -->Max

    Gravel or sand?

I've had no problems with sand yet. Haha I mean nothing in life is perfect, you have to do things the right way. If you do that, then you won't have any problems....and if you want gravel then don't get cories or loaches. -->Max

    Gravel or sand?

Sand is better for basically anything if you do it right. It may make all the difference for your cories and loaches. Could be the difference between life and death. -->Max
