If you have hardvwater i would rather suggest you go for some shelldwellers and without plants. The other sensible option would be to have livebearers as they reside in hard water.

Potassium permanganate would be a good way. Prepairing the solution in a bucket than leaving the plants in the solution for 10 min. Most suggest that you should not submerge the roots but i submerge the whole plant with no problems. The solution should be dark purple when you prepaire it...
