Kinda confused...?? Biological filters are a good thing; the bacteria eats the ammonia.
Adding ammonia? Never heard of that one before; ideally your ammonia level should be 0 ppm.
Ph; I don't worry about - my fish seem to be happy.
Mike.
WOW Jeff!
You sure did an awesome job!.. As far as plants go; I use plants from my yard; easy in the budget..I have ferns, moss growing from rocks, some flower plants I don't know the name. I found the ones that work best for me. Some will last for six months or more.
Mike.
Hello Linda,
There are many many reasons for high ammonia levels. Over crowding is one; but that doesn't seem to be your problem. How many times, how much, and what kind of water ru using? What filtration do you have.
Welcome to AA,
Mike.
I have two in my cichlid tank.
Had them since they were "pups".. Now one is 6 and the other 7 inches long. They are kewl for sure and will clean up the tank during the night. During the day they will defend their territory.

Interesting reading
Thanks guys; very interesting. FYI, when I do a water change I use rain water that I have collected; and/or well water. I never use chemicals.
Granted; I have had a few fish expire; but I think everyone has from time to time. Trying to get my keni to breed now; looks...
All great advice from folks here
I have multi filter medias; so I will clean (1) one week and leave the rest alone. Then in another week or so I will clean another (different) one. This way it doesn't upset the bacterial status. My canister filter ; I will only clean about ever six months...
125 gallon tank!
That is huge. This is what I would do;; start from scratch; put new water and let tank cycle on its own. Don't add fish or chemicals. I don't like chemicals. Check ammonia levels after 7 dayz or so; if ok add fish slowly.
Mike.
never seen that before
Keep me updated. I have the regular green and brown algae on my rocks and back of my tank. I keep it there as the fish nibble on it and it is also good for keeping nitrates and ammonia down.

It is diffiult to add new cichlids
With an electric blue that size; he has already claimed his territory. With a 55 gallon tank you have plenty of room to add more fish. Before you add new fish; re-arrange the furniture in your tank. Move all the rocks and structure to new part of the tank...
Got it seaweed! Thanks
Will try that. I agree it is a great way to get to know members better. I am surprised more members don't utilize the function.

Enjoy your new tank
This is a great hobby; just one thing I forgot to mention; you will see that the bigger your tank is; the easier it is to maintain.
Mike.
Hi Welcome to AA
That sure is a nice 55 gallon tank. Sounds like you got it all under control; except for the ammonia issue. In my experience; don't do that frequent of water change; let the tank settle and beneficial bacteria to work.
Mike.
29 gallon for sure!
The 29 gallon is the way to go for sure; and for a cost of 29 bucks; you can't beat it. The 9 extra gallons will help in the long run. A 29 gallon tank; is what I started with; and it worked great as a first tank for me.
Hope this helps.
Mike.
What kind of water did you use to fill the remaining 26 gallons with? By the way; a 29 gallon tank is an excellent size to begin with; that is what I started with.
