    How’s my new tank looking?

Had to take over a year off from the hobby due to a cross-country move, but now I’m back at it again! [emoji16] I learned a LOT from my old setup. Here’s what it looks like now. I need some help on organizing this mess. It’s a 36 gallon bow front. It’s pretty tall so my lighting actually...

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

90% water change and trimmed off dead leaves. One recently deceased baby cory found (RIP little guy). Rehomed my angelfish and traded them in at LFS for some plants. Will probably move those to the new tank I’m planning once it’s up and running. Most of the issues I had a few months ago have...

Hello from RVA! New to the hobby

Hello! I’m in RVA too! Welcome to the community :) I’ve been in the hobby for about 1.5 years. It’s lots of work but lots of fun too. And to answer your questions, yes, I believe it’s ok to start a new thread asking questions even though other people have asked similar ones. Read up as much as...

    Show off your favorite fish

What a pretty angelfish! I love her mask. I have a veiled angel just like her but it looks like it has a handlebar mustache. [emoji38]

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Santa was good to me this year. I got a new Fluval LED light and some long-handle tools (scissors, tweezers, scraper, etc). Here is the tank after installing the light, a pwc, and cleaning up the plants. [emoji5]

    Progression over the past year

Thanks everyone! It has been a roller coaster with as many defeats as wins. I’m proud of the trident fern. It didn’t do anything for a long time then it suddenly spread like wildfire! Coralbandit, I tried to grow moss on the front stick but the light just isn’t strong enough. It died and now...

    Progression over the past year

My aquarium’s plant growth over the past year I thought I was so cool at the time. It just seems like a hodgepodge of plants and sticks at this point. This was 12/22/16 2/14/16 Better composition and variety of plants How it looked when I won TOM June 2017. A little messy but I love the...

    Angelfish Tank

Thank you everyone for your input! I’ve heard many different views on how many angels can comfortably go in a 36 gallon. My current one still is still a juvenile so he’s not territorial or aggressive *yet*. Since 36 gallons is about the limit for angelfish, I’ve decided to find another...

    Angelfish Tank

I have been debating on converting my 36 gallon bowfront community tank into an angelfish tank. We have one juvenile marbled angelfish in the community tank and he(?) has captivated the heart of my boyfriend and all of our visitors. Being used to the other shy/standoffish fish in the tank, we...

    River Aquarium

Coralbandit Ooh, fancy! I’ll definitely check those out. Do you have any dead zones at all or does everything seem to get decent movement? WYRenegade That’s a good idea! I wouldn’t need a huge tank, but I know I want something bigger than the standard 20 gal long.

    River Aquarium

I found this tutorial: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/features/articles/the-secret-to-setting-up-a-better-river-aquarium The water flow technique they use is clever. I’d want something bigger than the 20 gal long they use so a custom tank and setup may be in order. Kind of intimidating...

    River Aquarium

So I discovered the Gold Neon Dwarf Goby and thought they were the most gorgeous fish ever. I just HAVE to have them. They need clean, fast moving water, so creating a river biome aquarium would be best. This is the first time I’ve ever considered something like this. Has anyone here created a...

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Scooped out a dead Cory and buried him in the garden. He hadn't looked well for a while, glad he's not suffering anymore. RIP little guy!

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Did a 75% water change, vacuumed up lots of brown dusty algae/diatoms (and snail poop!), sucked up lots of that goopy whiteish fungus, and added 2 bunches of moneywort and 4 bunches of purple/green cabomba to replenish what I've lost. It looks beautiful again, can't wait for the cabomba to grow...

    Help with decision making! ;)

I'm gonna second the incompatibility of angelfish and neons. Unfortunately it will most likely not end well. Phantom tetras are very pretty. And I personally looove corys so I will always recommend them! The more the merrier when it comes to a school of corys. But if you have bad luck with them...

    Plant health concerns

Small update: Haven't done a water change or deep clean yet, but I have noticed some new growth on one of my anubias plants. I noticed it either right before or right after I created this thread. The new leaf came in very yellow but has turned more green. It isn't fully mature yet but has grown...

    Plant health concerns

It's 36 gallons and moderately planted. I don't think it's reached toxic levels yet but I'd rather be safe than sorry. That and the proof is in the pudding, something isn't quite right! I'm just glad I caught it and it (hopefully) won't get any worse. We live in the suburbs so we definitely get...

    Plant health concerns

I thought it was turning into a slow decline in health. I'll vacuum the gravel next water change day and specifically keep an eye out for the little balls. I'll let whatever is left take its course and then lay off the tabs for a while. I looked up DIY osmocote tabs and found that people add...

    Plant health concerns

Oh dang, really? When I got them the person said he used them every other month-ish. I honestly didn't even research osmocote when I got them. When I vacuum the gravel I do still see the little balls occasionally. I did think to myself that they sure were lasting a long time. I've put in maybe 8...

    Plant health concerns

The 30 inch fluorescent bulbs that came with the tank. I am planning on upgrading, just need the time and money and also to figure out the details. I'm not adding a CO2 system any time soon so I don't want to push the lighting too much! That sounds like exactly what I need and what I was...

    Plant health concerns

Hi everyone, I need some advice on getting my plants looking better. I've done a little research and it looks like they may have some nutrient deficiencies. The tank is healthy but the plants have seen better days. They're not as vibrant green as they used to be. The whole tank seems to be a...

    My 36 gallon planted adventure

Hi everyone! Little update. I made a forum about it, but if you didn't see, my corys had babies! There's 3 - two are adolescent, and one is just a bit more than a head and tail, starting to get a Cory shape so it's a tiny, tiny version of the adults. Here's a pic with the two adolescents...
