Why do my angelfish think it’s a new tank whenever I do a water change?

Super late reply, but there was an article published recently that showed angelfish, when they fight to establish their hierarchy, there’s a certain chemical balance in the water from their bile (?) secretions to indicate the hierarchy. When you do a water change, it hits the reset button and...

    Sump + Canister Filter Question

Hi all! I have a 72 gallon cichlid tank with an in-tank drain which flows into a 10 gallon sump tank. I use a canister filter (Eheim Professional 3) as a pump and filter. It doesn't seem like this setup is doing a good job of keeping the water clear. For example, there's a lot of floating...

    Pea puffer not eating?

Hi everyone, This past weekend, I got two pea puffers and put them in my community tank. I've been feeding them thawed cyclops since the people at the store said they've been doing well on those. So far, one of them is doing really well and swimming around. But the other one is laying on the...

    Water changes

Yeah, my brother removed all of the substrate from our tank, and replaced with sand (long story) and our tank crashed - we were losing 1 fish every day for a week or so. Checked the parameters, and ammonia/nitrites were super high.

    New to cichlids!

Part of the reason I commented is that I'm looking for recommendations as well! I'm totally open to suggestions, and can't wait to build this tank out more. Best of luck to you, OP, as we start this journey together! :)

    New to cichlids!

Livefishdirect.com has a great selection, and was recommended to me by my boss (who gave me my 72 gallon tank). He had cichlids in it before me, and now I'm going for that too! I hear otopharynx (peacock) are beautiful, as are polits (mbuna)

    Newish Tank, Substrate

It's been cycled, and I have a mollie with white spot disease in it now. I'm moving him to the quarantine tank soon, treating the water, and I wanted to remove some gravel (or all) and add sand. Do you have any sand suggestions? There's a lot of options out there. I eventually want it to have...

    Newish Tank, Substrate

Hi all, I currently have a 5 week old tank, with a gravel substrate. I am planning on switching to sand substrate. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

    New Tank, Approx. 1 month

The water heater I have keeps it at 78-80 F consistently, I never see it above 80 and have only seen it get down to 78. I haven't moved anything since setting up the tank, but I've been vacuuming with the water changes. I spoke to someone yesterday who suggested even smaller water changes...

    New Tank, Approx. 1 month

Yes, I cycled the tank before adding the two platies in early January. And I used the water conditioner before adding the water into the tank (I added the conditioner to the tub of new water). For reference, the ammonia, nitrates and pH are all fine - I check every week.

    New Tank, Approx. 1 month

Hi everyone! I'm new to the world of aquariums, and have a few questions and concerns I'm coming up against: I have a 20 gallon tank with a whisper EX20 filter, an air pump and the water temperature is around 78-80 F. I use conditioner, and some aquarium salt. I do a 30% water change each...
