This is what Captain looks like right now

    Betta with Velvet?

1 - Betta fish, yellow-goldish dust over scales, scales kind of matte looking instead of shiny, swimming slower 2 -- The temp is 77 degrees Fahrenheit and he currently needs a water change. I don't know any other parameters because I'm a bad fish mom. 3 -- the tank is a 5.5 gallon tank with a...

    aquarium substrate

I have two betta fish, each with their own 5.5 gallon tank. Currently I'm using gravel as the substrate. However, I don't have the best back and cleaning gravel is difficult, especially with the algae the tanks as they near cleaning time. I'm looking for a substrate that's easier to clean but...

Just in case, I'll look into shrimp instead. And I don't want to increase bioload too much in such a tiny tank

Oh yeah, I do my research before getting new pets :) I'd love a bigger tank someday for guppies or something! I was looking into nerite snails a minute ago but apparently they're escape artists? Which is kinda funny except my cat might wanna taste... I'll check out the shrimp though! I didn't...

    Betta Fish Companions

each betta has its own 5.5 gallon tank - they measure about 16 inches long x 8.5 inches wide x 10 inches deep The tanks are both heated and have filters (the picture on top is Pebbles - the other is Captain)

that (or a type of pleco) was one of my first thoughts. Size-wise a snail would be perfect - are they okay in a heated tank? Would I have to swap out the pebbles for something else?

Oh, I should add - the fish tank that gets more sun houses a betta seems rather mild compared to the other one, so I don't think he'd attack a fish that was out of his way. BUT it's a small tank and he often goes to the bottom to hide out in his castle

I have two male betta fish, each in their own 5.5 gallon heated tanks. One of these tanks gets more sunlight than the other, and it tends to have a bit of an algae problem because of this. I don't think this algae problem is something a bottom feeder wouldn't be able to help control, though...

    Fiddler Crab Question

Yeah, go for it. I used aquarium epoxy to attach the plexi glass dividers to the tank, and the shells to the plexi glass ramps. It worked well for the dividers but it took a while because it needs 24-48 hours to dry and it needed to dry before I could check for leaks. It didn't hold as well on...

    Fiddler Crab Question

I have 7 male fiddler crabs and they're territorial animals so I set them up with plenty of space. I have the water and sand divided with plexiglass because I have a pulled muscle in my back (fun fun) and I can't really clean a bunch of heavy wet sand - it just makes cleaning the tank easier...

    Fiddler Crab Question

Yeah I'm down to 7 crabs now :( one died earlier this week (he looked like he got caught up in a fight between bigger crabs) and then Arnold passed, and another one died later this morning, I think from stress. He was blowing bubbles and hanging out in a water dish with Arnold and wasn't doing...

    Fiddler Crab Question

He hung out in his own space awhile then went back into the rest of the water and seemed fine but this morning I got up and found that he'd died and was missing another leg. Either the big crabs are being jerks or he was losing limbs from stress but this post is irrelevant now :( Sorry Arnold.

    Fiddler Crab Question

Hi! I have a 20 gallon tank with 9 male fiddler crabs living in it (there were 10 but one of them passed earlier this week :[ ) The tank is divided up into thirds - the two outer thirds have sand, the middle third has brackish water and a filter. It's covered with a screen and has a heat...

    Sick betta fish

I did a 50% water change and the ammonia is better, and I added salt to the new water I added. He seems happier and more energetic. I'm going to keep using the salt and hold off on bettafix for now - it didn't seem to improve his mood much and it seems pretty strong. Thanks!

    Sick betta fish

Thanks for the advice! I read somewhere that warmer water might help kill off the bacteria causing fin rot which is why I increased the temperature a bit. Usually I leave it about the same. I'll try the salt again for now. Is bettafix a decent medixation? People seem to be mixed about it and I...

    Sick betta fish

1~ betta fish with tattered fins that had blackened edges, lethargic, seems to have trouble swimming and is less active, just seems to lay on betta bed (hasn't been laying on the bottom since water change yesterday) - assumed fin rot. Previously treated with salt for 7 days in a quarantine tank...

    Hiya!

Hi, My name is Heather (if any of you are botanists you probably picked up in that). I'm currently a biology major at my university. An evolution course got me interested in betta fish so I picked up Titus the summer after my sophomore year. This year I'm taking an animal behavior course with...
