Betta, Dropsy - Can I reuse planted tank ?

UPDATE - its not dropsy and he's doing well :) Part of my "keeping him comfortable" was to up the number of water changes. I figured fresh water would feel ALOT better under those scales. I suspected Dropsy when I saw one part of him getting that "pinecone" scale look. After a couple of...

    Goodbye, Eli

It really does stink when they go ! I agree with you .... you never do get used to it. I love the idea of the video ! that's great. And I broke into a smile when I saw his soap dish & moss bed. He was well loved. I'm sure he's bragging to all the other fishes about how GREAT his...

Betta, Dropsy - Can I reuse planted tank ?

WOW - you've made me blush ! Thank YOU ! Spots hanging in there. Still swims over to say 'Hi' and wag his tail every time I walk past him but he's starting to spend a little more time in his hidey hole. He doesn't really seem to be suffering, so I'm keeping him comfortable and giving...

Betta, Dropsy - Can I reuse planted tank ?

Thanks guys. I'll bleach the tank and hidey-hole and QT the plants after Spot passes - excellent idea. I have a spare 2.5G tank that I'll use for the new occupant when he arrives. All my tanks are bottomless so the beneficial bacteria are attached to the glass, decorations and plants...

Betta, Dropsy - Can I reuse planted tank ?

My poor Spot has dropsy. He's been my special kitchen buddy for 2 years - he's too young to go ! But its happening  I'm keeping him comfortable right now. He's in a 2.5G planted tank with a handmade ceramic hidey hole to duck into. As I understand it, dropsy can be caused by many...

    Tanks overgrown with hair algae....

I feel your pain - I had hair algae like crazy. I never like suggesting a fish to take care of an algae issue (but we'd need more parameters to help you as the others have suggested) but I ended up taking home a beautiful pair of rosy barbs. I had the room (capacity) and loved the long-finned...

    37G - two angels and ????

LOL F'n'F - understand ! It was the danios I wanted to see - but now that the cockatoos have been mentioned I think I'm going with 2 angels, 2 cockatoos and 6 - 10 (or more if I can) cardinal tetras - its gonna be an awesome tank ..... assuming I can keep the algae away on this one (but thats...

    CCTV News--UPDATED 12:55 PM 3/25/2007

OMG this is too funny MCD ! I really should have read this earlier - reading it all at one sitting has proven to be much to much ..... please excuse me while I clean my chair !!

    How do these PYTHONS work?

The bigger issue are chloridimides. Chlorine breaks down over time, and as mentioned above, levels vary by town. Chloridimides never break down natrually so a dechlor is a must in this case.

    Aquatic Frog Questions!

Yep, the frogs will uproot it unless its established with a decent root system. I tried clover with them and it all got uprooted. The recommendation for substrate for them are pebbles so that they can't swallow it - not that I've experienced any problems with them swallowing the EcoComplete...

    How do these PYTHONS work?

Mine drains slowly also, and the pressure isn't all that great, but it still beats the bucket thing (esp when you yourself only weigh about 100 lbs ! a 5 gallon bucket of water is mighty heavy at 1/3rd of your body weight). I use a regular syphon into a bucket to gravel vac (I use a 1" tube...

    37G - two angels and ????

I just bought a 37G to replace the 20Long that wasn't even set up yet (serious MTS ! I'm upgrading before I even get the original tank established LOL). I'm definitely without a doubt going to have angels in that tank and to avoid long term rehousing issues I'm going with two (no intention of...

    Is it safe?

Ok, maybe I'm weird, but I like that piece !!! I may make something up like that in ceramics tomorrow ... seriously ! its cute :) I do think the holes may be too small unless you did just neon tetras or something a similar size. But because its painted I really wouldn't risk it. I'm not...

    Hypothetically.....what would you do?

Definitely the Malawi cichlids !! No doubt in my mind .... I mean DREAMS. Get the tank !!!! who needs furniture ????

    Aquatic Frog Questions!

African Dwarf Frogs (which as mentioned, are never albino) are great. I have 3 of them in a 3 gallon eclipse but they'd do better in a larger tank. They are VERY active and are really adorable. A 10Gallon could probably house 5 nicely and give them lots of space for you to watch their antics...

Pond snail acting incredibly bizarre - what is going on??

My snails always "go for a float" as I call it. The Mystery Snails do it in the big tank and the pond snails do it in the pond snail breeding tank. I think its more of a search for food than anything else - I notice that many many pond snails do it just under the romaine lettuce leaves I put...

    Frozen Krill

I placed it in tank water for about 5 minutes before attempting to break up the cube. I do the same thing with the cubes of bloodworms and mysis shrimp. UGH - refrozen ! I bought two packages !! I'll try another cube this morning and if the same thing happens I'll bring them back, and...

    37 gallon - ok for Angels ?

BillD - the 20G will certainly leak. One had a sucession of hamsters who loved to chew off the silicone. The other was used to raise mealworms and waxworms for my lizards - the silicone in that one is in pretty bad shape also.

    Frozen Krill

I bought some frozen krill cubes today and I feel like a dope LOL - the cube defrosted but it still stayed in a cube and for the life of me I couldn't stir it apart. I even tried breaking it up with my eyedropper which helped a little but mostly just made a few big chunks out of the cube. How...

    37 gallon - ok for Angels ?

Why species only - LOL, I don't know - just thought I'd rather have more angels of different colors and that it would look nice. And of course SNAILS ! Gotta have my brigs LOL I have no intention of breeding. BUT if I could only house 2 long term in the tank then I would probably add a small...

    37 gallon - ok for Angels ?

I STILL have those two 20G longs sitting there waiting to be filled ! (since September !!). Then I realized that the 29G and 37G have the same footprint - and I'll be honest with you - I've been absolutely dreading removing the silicone and resealing the 2 20s (they housed hamsters and...
