German engineering it is then. What is this bypassing that I hear about some filters being notorious for? Do they get clogged and the water re-routed around the media instead of through it? If so it seems like the Eheim can't possibly do this.
I received some Gift cards from Premium Aquatics for Christmas and planned to use them for a new canister filter. I wanted to set up a simple 55g freshwater community tank. I see that most here recommend a Fluval or a Rena however they do not carry these.
My choices are between:
Eheim...
As I said it's not mine and I only keep reef aquariums. I know very little about FW and I don't have the kits to test hers. She's an old lady who likes aquariums. I've set her up on weekly WC's of RO/DI 5 gal at a time. This is a 55 gal that is about 5 months young. Her filtration is a...
A lady whose aquarium I've been maintaining bought fish from Wal Mart and didn't quarantine even though I've told her multiple times to do so. I even set her up with a small tank for this purpose that I guess I should take back. Anyway she calls me and says all her fish are dying and growing a...
Does anyone have any pics or diagrams showing exactly how these canister filters hook up and work?
The FX5 says it comes with a dvd but I'd like to be getting familiar with them how they work and what sort of maintenance they need.

I appreciate your reply and please don't get the idea that this tank is just going to turn into a sewer. It will be taken care of but I want to minimize what the owner has to do once I'm not the caretaker anymore. This is why I'm here asking questions. I also appreciate the precious...
Ok we're moving along with the planning. He definately doesn't want a planted tank.....doesn't want the hassle or any of that mess. What sort of livestock does that completely eliminate from the list?
Also do you think the two FX5 filters should drain into a sump with a return pump? Seems...
I do have some experience with oscars, plecos, guppies and mollies...thats it for fw fish. I really like the ideas you guys have thrown my way so far especially the one by lonewolfblue. Please keep in mind that I won't be maintaining this tank forever and whatever I put in it for the owner...
Hah hashbaz....I'll have plenty of pics as this progresses. I'm actually not that excited about this project since I wanted him to do a reef tank...but alas he isn't gonna pay me to maintain it and doesn't wanna do it himself so....that's that. I'm not knocking FW in any way for the record...i...
I'm pretty excited about being in this forum because I can tell it's gonna be a big help.
First I'll definately look into the FX5..
6 large heaters won't be a problem I've always been a fan of Ebo-Jagers but Finnex
titaniums on a controller would be great also....what do u guys recommend...
I appreciate the replies so far and would definately like to talk more about livestock but before I can get into that too much I need to know about FW equipment so I can get it up and running/cycling.
Do you guys use RO/DI water for your FW tanks?
Lets also talk filtration for a tank this...
