ammonia in tap water while cycling tank

Look I ain’t trying to argue here, but your main question from the original post was what was going with your cycle. Not bottled water? Yes, you did ask if you can use that. You can use whatever your heart desires. Use rain water, river water, bottled water, or water from your community pool...

ammonia in tap water while cycling tank

“Chlorine and Chloramine, are extremely harmful to fish and aquatic creatures. I’m a saltwater person, and even I use pure water when mixing my salt. I purchased a RO/DI unit and I recommend them to not only saltwater users, but freshwater users alike. Tap water poses way to many trace elements...

ammonia in tap water while cycling tank

Because it’s a trace element that all tap water has, that the human liver is capable of processing in low amounts over time. It’s not an unnatural occurrence.

ammonia in tap water while cycling tank

And not to disrespect your answer, but it sounds like you already had your answer in mind. Haha, without physically being there it could have been a multitude of things. That’s harder to see from my side. I was just trying to go off what was given. So, I thought possibly it could be patience and...

I’m glad you mentioned that, because we have a lot of leftover pallets at the barn where I work!

    Contemplating a break???

Also another great point! Haha, I just thought I heard of some entities that will accept donations from people for these purposes. Maybe they make sure they’re okay to be put out in the wild?

    Contemplating a break???

That’s a great point, I didn’t even think about the possibility of donating it back to the ocean as well. If it will survive, I’m not sure. It will depend on several factors.

Cycling with fish in due to some poor advice.

I surely will! I have no reason to use it at the moment, however my buddy may be getting water from me soon. I’m curious myself, because I can’t deny the possibility of my TDS meter being faulty as well. But I am actually unclear as to how I can test if the meter is actually is accurate. But I...

Cleaning and breaking down large tank

Something else that has crossed my mind a lot is Aquaculture. I really want to get creative, but unfortunately at times I lack this ability. I want to efficiently utilize my space in order to get the most out of my surface area. Eventually, once things prove to be stable, I will be hopefully...

Cycling with fish in due to some poor advice.

Accumulated water would make some sense to me for sure, when I start mine up it will actually pull a TDS reading initially, and then it begins to decrease as it filters out. Eventually reaching zero.

Cycling with fish in due to some poor advice.

I’m willing to put money on it’s a mix of possible accumulated water and differences in the PH of water. How many stages were you running? From my understanding, our kitchen sinks use at least a 2 stage. Reefs benefit from only 4 stages and higher. I would have to check and make sure that is...

Cycling with fish in due to some poor advice.

Agreed, Autumnsky. There are multiple ways achieve a result. These bacteria also exist in many forms and fashions. Within almost all environments. Which I have come to find through some researching I have been doing for some time. All in my most recent thread I created. The only thing is, I did...

Cleaning and breaking down large tank

I am definitely going to check out all of these ideas! Thank you for replies and the link! That crate idea however, is standing out me. Maybe do something such as bubble wrap around the tank or wrap it in moving blankets. Then frame it up.

The Nitrogen Cycle and It's Importance

For some reason I can not edit my post on my phone, and I would like to correct a statement concerning electrons and Nitrogen atoms. When I was speaking about the sharing of electrons between the two nitrogen atoms, I was referring to their valence electrons. Which are the outer most orbiting...

    Confused about cycling 10g

I agree with above statement. Had nitrites been zero, I wouldn’t be concerned. Also if you would like, I posted a somewhat detailed thread of my own concerning the Nitrogen Cycle. It may prove to be of some use to you!

The Nitrogen Cycle and It's Importance

I decided to create this thread to post my findings, and to offer a place of discussion for a very important topic. One that is critical and most necessary to any new aquarium, be it saltwater or fresh. I became fascinated with the Nitrogen Cycle while studying it in my Microbiology class, that...

    Water changing colour

For starters, what’s the brand and model of this pump? Is it new or used? Also, is your tank new or has it been running for some time?

    Old equipment for new tank?

Depend on your view! From my understanding most use a water and vinegar solution. Cleaning does help remove the chance of a pathogen infecting your new system. If the filters haven’t been out of water to long or in something to support their health for the time being, you could use them possibly...

Cycling with fish in due to some poor advice.

I agree with both statements, and see how the death and washing with tap water can be problematic. However, I still do not find how reducing Ammonia to Ammonium makes it useful or furthers a cycle. The only benefit I am seeing here, is possibly a "non-toxic cycle." Because Ammonia is already...

    Confused about cycling 10g

Not a problem! Asking more questions, only develops further understanding. So, as far as the average goes, that is kind of tough to answer. Like previously mentioned, you can does 2ppm ammonia. I know others who do this, and it works just fine. It is the same concept, except that it just...

What is growing on my plants?

To me it just looks like regular ole brown spot algae. The spot it originates in, is more than likely due to that is the spot that favors it most. I would treat it like it can spread, because it actually possibly can. All algae have the capability to thrive in some pretty harsh environments...

Cleaning and breaking down large tank

Great idea! I'm hoping the cleaning process goes more smoothly than the physical move. I thought of something, that I thought I would post to get some constructive feedback about. I was thinking possible constructing something out of wood, that the tank could sit on top off and be pushed. That...

So it creates a cation. Basically adds protons to it. This has me pretty curious, haha.
