    Tragedy Strikes

Wierd. Sounds like he burst a blood vessel in his head causing brain/nerve damage. Could be he got startled and slammed headfirst into your canopy or glass? Definitely appears to be a freak occurrence as opposed to a typical fish disease. The world will never know... My condolences.

    Mushroom splitting?

It's possible. Normally a ricordia will develop another mouth(s) first which will slowly spread away from the original mouth before the ric splits into two (or more) seperate whole ricordia mushrooms. Of course, just like all mushroom coral, if you want to help it along, you could just take a...

    Crushed coral

Well, you only have a 55g tank and you don't have anything setup in it except the CC, so now would be the perfect time to change it out if that's your desire and it won't be too big a job. You could either bag up your leftover CC and sell it on craigslist, or if you're an avid DIYer you could...

    Gravel or Sand

Gravel and CC are very "oldschool" SW fishkeeping methods usually used in conjunction with an undergravel filter so you don't have the detrius buildup that you would expect. I was at a retiree's house last week, who's been keeping SW fish since he was 14, and for the life of me I could not get...

Help!! I have grave yard in my tank.

Excellent suggestions. Best of luck to you, land locked, and your critters. Let us know how it goes and what you find out.

Help!! I have grave yard in my tank.

First step in any situation like this is an emergency water change(s). Don't be afraid to do a 100% water change. Obviously there is something toxic in the water that must be removed before you have any more losses. After (or during) the water change remove the suspect item. Get your tank back...

    pulsing xenia

If it does like your tank and lives, don't expect it to stay confined to one area. It can and does spread by fractionation, and possibly sexual reproduction(?). Microscopic pieces will break off, drift in the current, and grow wherever they land. I have a 125g that is filled with pink pulsing...

    Glueing Coral frags to rocks?

I use superglue gel all the time for fragging. Even better, if it's available at your local hobby shops or fish stores is IC Gel brand glue. It is a special superglue formula that is a favorite of fraggers. It comes in a large purple and white tube, and the reason it's a favorite is because the...

    3 Week Old 15 Gallon

That's really sad to hear. I wish you'd have asked here first and most likely avoided putting them thru that kind of death. As Devilish asked, were those sold to you as saltwater Mollies? If so, they would have been kept in the same tanks as the other saltwater fish, and not where the...

    3 Week Old 15 Gallon

I agree that by now your tank has already cycled. I started with cured LR, LS, and bacteria suppliments in each my tanks as well, and they all cycled within a couple of days. Of course, you're welcome to add a little food/shrimp for the bacteria to munch on as was mentioned above. Covering the...

Amen to that! That's footer material there. That's also been my experience..., and I think melosu's glowing purple tank attests to that as well. LOL

    VHO T-12 Questions

I actually found this thread during a google (small world) so I figured I'd perform a little necromancy instead of starting a new thread. I have a six foot long, 3 bulb VHO DIY on my 125g with a ballast that has absolutely no markings or identification whatsoever. (I bought the tank used)...

    new BTA

Congrats on the successful clown hosting. That is one of the coolest relationships in the ocean. As for climbing the glass, yes, that's perfectly normal. The anemone will wander periodically looking for a spot where it's comfortable, and where it likes the light level. Make sure that your filter...

    purple up!!

I'm not sure what you were told to expect, but after only a week and a half (of doing anything) you're not going to see any difference in coralline growth. The only thing that grows that quickly is stuff you DON'T want in your tank. LOL When it comes to a successful SW experience, patience is...

Purple firefish going on 3rd week of hiding.

The purple firefish (Nemateleotris decora) do not buddy-up well with other purple firefish in the way that regular, red (Nemateleotris magnifica) firefish do. Yes, they do hide a lot, and that's only natural behavior for them. The red firefish also like to hide, but not near as much as the...

using super glue for fragging- plz advise

The liquid super glue is designed for smooth surface to smooth surface bonding with no air gaps between them. The super glue gel is made for filling small gaps between two surfaces that don't meet perfectly... like live rock and your coral. Yes, you can use super glue gel on button...

Need a little help with 90gal

Funny coincidence... I bought my 125g from a guy in a mobile home for $300 because he had to get it out quick because it was breaking thru his floor. The floor in a mobile home is only plywood. I you're going to attempt it (which I wouldn't recommend), at least put down a large sheet of 3/4"...

The Porites Fragging Saga, Updated 3/7/07

Beautiful job, Lindsay. I wouldn't feel bad about splitting it. I honestly don't see how anyone would've been able to remove it in one piece on a sliver of rock that thin. Heck, I probably would've seen it as a mixed blessing, and mounted the frags on 4 seperate plugs.

Good choice, IMHO. I love my little six line. Great colors, amazing eyes, and such a cool personalty. http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=375

    just need confirmation.

How timely... I just bought a TDS meter recently, and found out that the RO/DI water I'm getting from my LFS is reading about 130ppm, about the same as our tap water after being run thru my Brita water pitcher. Our raw tap water is around 300ppm.

How 2 stop coral from growing fast ?????????

I've got the same problem with my pink xenia. If you want to just open up some room in your xenia patches you can place some rubble rock in them. Ater about a week or two the surrounding xenia will have attached to the rubble. Carefully pick-up the rubble and peel off from the main colony any...
