AQUARIUM SALT MAINTENANCE IN FW TANK?

At least at petco the salt is used in that manner to act as a slow release. When dealing with that many fish incoming on a weekly basis, the spread of a disease is a huge risk so using salt is an obvious choice. "Slow release" is required because the units have automatic water changes. There is...

    More varied diet.

You could just feed one pellet...its variety that gives you the best results. That seems good, but when it comes down to it the options are endless. There is no textbook answer, you gotta experiment. Just one thing, what you say "cichlid" that is a very broad term. In this case it sounds like...

    More varied diet.

I feed... NLS jumbo pellets Hikari spirulina pellets Frozen krill, brine, mysis. Spirulina flakes The "seaweed salad" stuff Vegetables Variety is key for growth, color, and overall health. My tank is a mix of herbivores, omnivores, and even two carnivores (ven and livi.

    Zebra diet/picky-ness

Is your "zebra" cichlid a red zebra? As in african or something else that has 'zebra' stripes? Does it look like this? http://homepage.mac.com/jabaro/Images/Zebra.jpg If so the best thing to feed would be a quality pellet or flake made of spirulina. Be careful with the flakes, it sounds as...

    Green Severums

I have seen many setups with severums in tanks with angels and the like. See how it works, there is a good chance it will be fine.

The real reason I love this hobby.

Great post, it really is good to slow down once and a while and take notice to things like this. In between the rush of doing water changes and feeding its nice to just stop and watch, i usually end up staring at the tank for an hour.

    Magazine mix up?

Today at work i was reading the may 2007 issue of Aquarium Fish International. There is a "Cichlid Forum" for general cichlid Q + A. There was a question about jewel cichlids i believe and there was a main caption saying "Persistent health problems often mean environmental woes." On the page was...

Ideas for a jack dempsey tank mate???

Where do you get the fish from? Any patterns in deaths? etc... I would not add anything else anytime soon...give it a month. Like someone said, its possible your tank has not cycled since you were not adding dechlor.

    Looking for poseidon/neptune statue!

Unless its something like a goldfish or oscar...i would not worry about that. A few months ago i read as a response to a question in a fish mag that fish avoid sharp objects. That they recognize when something is harmful.

I am SO frustrated trying to introduce a new fish !!!!

They may get a long just fine....as they are small. But they are going to outgrow that tank steadily. Pick one region of fish that you like and go from there....i know myself as well as majority of the other experienced fishkeepers out there prefer to keep fish relative to their biological...

I am SO frustrated trying to introduce a new fish !!!!

I'm going to be honest...thats what one of the worst mixes i've ever heard of. First of all a 90 isnt big enough for the pacu (25"+) or shovelnose (40"+). Not to mention an arrowana. The frontosa is an african rift lake fish that does best in groups. I suggest you get rid of the cat and pacu...

    Bazza the freshwater tortoise.

After looking into it it seems to be an Australian thing to call them tortoises....

Fish that should come with WARNING stickers

You know something...the petco i work at offers said class. Only they dont advertise it. See each store has to come up with some original idea to offer to the public...its a corporate requirement. Only my manager does not advertise so the store gets its credentials but it doesn't actually happen.

After seeing the filter floss thread...

Just keep an eye on it, sometimes the floss seems to reach is capacity of particles and will restrict flow and possibly cause overflow.

    FW Crab setup

Whatever you get make sure it is completely freshwater...if there is such a thing. Get any information from more than one source to confirm. Most crabs in pet store and fish shops are fiddler/red claw which are brackish although may be kept in fresh.

What, really, is cycling? A hoax? A way for LFSs to get $?

Try looking it up... I'm no expert on planted tanks, so i do not know if they have any affect on the cycle. BUT, i'm assuming you used some sort of test kit when setting up your tanks? If not you will have no clue. If you did, and had accurate testing equipment, it would be hard not to realize...

    Anybody heard of this?

I have seen mono argenteus kept in both fresh and salt. Obviously different than a GT since they are a brackish fish, but i have seen huge ones in salt tanks at rainforest cafe.

    A Dramatic Centerpiece Fish?

On the idea of angels, go buy a few from petco. A 20 will do much more for these fish which are probably going to end up in 5 gals. ...speaking from experience after working here.

    Miracle fish thread

I have an ob peacock that i got out of an 'asst african' tank at work. Like africans do sometimes....it had a 'heart attack' sort of deal so i pulled it out and put it aside. 15min later i checked on it it was just chillin in the container. I've since had it for a few months and it is doing great.

    Concern over Cichlid I.D Threads

And that goes beyond people who even attempt finding info on forums like this. The majority of people who purchase these fish have 10 gallon community tanks and just shop by whats on sale.

    Spot Vac?

If you have a powerhead of sumbersible filter you can use that to blow the waste out of the tight places.

    Mbuna's and Pleco??

I have had a pleco in with my africans for a while. The only issue i have had is my red zebra picking at the plecos' fins.

    Miracle Loach

I've had africans get 'heart attacks' numerous times at work. They get very stressed when trying to avoid the net. I usually just set them aside and they come back after 10 minutes or so.

    Using bio-spira to end cycle.

I would think if you added the bio spira and fish. Then did a big PWC i think it would be fine. I have used bio-spira a few times so far...each time adding the product and a full stocking of fish. The results have been solid...cycled in under a week.
