    Mossy green algae

I've got a new problem. Mossy green algae began growing on my star coral and some green buttons. It is choking the stars to death. I tried to lightly brush the algae away but most can't be removed. It is also grown completely around the tube of a fan worm and on LR in a few places. I have a...

    Storing RO water

I store RO/DI water in 5 gal water bottles with snap tight lids. I usually keep them for a few weeks before bringing them to the office where the salt is added. I airate for a couple of days and then dump into the fuge. Haven't had any problems yet.

    More light?

I was hoping that you would say that there was a 50/50 bulb available for this fixture and that this would be better than adding nothing. No ?????????????????

    More light?

I have a 72gal reef tank with a 36" CoralLife Lunar AquaLight PC, 10K & actinic. I took it off my previous 46gal tank. I would like to increase the light but am on a tight budget right now. I have a 48in reflector which originally came with the 72gal tank. It has a 32w All Glass "Aquarium"...

    Water General RD-102

In that the filter is about 1 year old, should I just replace the 1st, 2nd and 3rd stage filters anyway? The sediment filter looks clean but has a slight tan tint rather than the pure white that it was originally. As an aside:: how can I change my displayed aquarium info? I went to "User...

    Water General RD-102

No - I don't have a TDS meter. It's easy enough to change the 3 large filters hanging from the bottom of the unit. I guess I'll order a set and see how that works. The other filters are "in-line" and may be a pain to change, especially if it isn't necessary to do them yet.

    Water General RD-102

I've got a Water General RD-102 RO/DI unit. It has been up for about year and produces about 10-15 gal per week. The unit is rated @ 100 GPD but has gotten slooooow. It takes about 2.25 hours to fill a single 5 gal bottle. Do I need to change all of the filters or is it likely that only 1...

    New 75 gal questions!

OK - I'll be the odd man out. I have had 2 reef tanks, neither of which was drilled for an overflow. I use an overflow box and have never had a single problem with it. It takes less rooom in a small-medium tank and may save you money on the tank. Both of my tanks were bought 2nd hand and both...

    Aiptasia war

I used concentrated lemon juice and it kicked their buts. I also bought a Peppermint Shrimp to keep the problem away. Worked for me and cost almost nothing.

    Lighting 72 gal Bow

I've got a 72 gal reef tank which has been up and running for 1.5 years. I have just put a new set of bulbs (Actinic and 10K) into the fixture and am resetting the duel timers. How many hours of 10k and how many hours of actinic do you recommend? Should the blue actinic come on before & after...

    Purpleb & Green problems

When I had my 46 gal reef running I had what I believed to be a moderate cyano problem. Tried everything recommended except food reduction without luck. The solution seemed to be to just suck the stuff off the substrate, weekly, when I did my water changes. A few months ago I moved up to a...

    Fuge questions

I've got my 30+ gal sump/fuge up & running for several weeks now. I have two questions: The overflow box drains surface water into a narrow chamber which then overflows through a filter pad and onto the LR rubble. The water then passes out of the bottom of the LR chamber and rises up and over...

    Refugium lighting

Very good read on macros. To answer your question, I put in Red Gracilaria - Brown Gracilaria - Green Grape Caulerpa. I think I'll yank the Green Grape Caulerpa out and replace it with the Cheato that I intended to add last. I try to avoid headachs. :>)

    Refugium lighting

I've finally got the refugium all set up. It takes up about 60% of my 28 gal sump. So far I have added: 3 - Magcro algaes 3 - hard shell clams 4 -bristle worms 4 - spagetti worms...

    Which Macro-Algae??

Well - I'm about to fill my first refugium. It is about 35% of my 28 gal sump. I've got a 24 watt 50/50 light and intended to put an inch of LS in first. I'll probably add a few snails, worms, stars and a clam or two, along with a mess of pods. I've heard that some macros grow out of control...

    Fuge flow rate

UPDATE I received the AquaC Urchin Pro today. I half filled the sump and tested the skimmer to see how it discharges. The skimmer came with a MagDrive 3 (350 GPH) which I ordered. With the skimmer running, water flows gently out of the unit and runs down the side of itself. No bubbles are...

    Fuge flow rate

I don't think it was designed that way either but I want to run a skimmer in the sump. Maybe I should set the skimmer up on the intake side but that would require that I tear out the first acrylic panel and I'm not thrilled with that idea either. The LR will not fit in the fuge area because I...

    whats a great filter????

50 lbs of LR is a good starting point. Opinions vary regarding quantity per gallon but 1.5lbs/gal is an accepted standard. Some use more, some less. Refugiums have many benefits and a little reading will get you a long way into understanding them. Here is a place to start...

    whats a great filter????

I'm still a novice but I would suggest that the "best" filter is large quantities of LR. Add a quality skimmer and a refugium and you've just become a professional reefer. :>) On my 46 gal tank I used about 110 lbs of LR, most of which was in the disp[lay tank. The balance was put into the...

    Fuge flow rate

I'm using this sump/fuge in a larger configuration. http://cgi.ebay.com/24-L-MegaPro-Refugium-Sump-kit-wet-dry-filter-aquarium_W0QQitemZ300139873216QQihZ020QQcategoryZ3212QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I intend to eliminate the bio-balls and relace them, with LR rubble. The eggcrate...

    Fuge flow rate

The first divider is glued in and the first chamber is only about 3" wide. It accomodates the inlet pipe and a heater or two. I didn't receive the AquaC Urchin yet so I don't know exactly how it discharges. The remaining dividers haven't been glued in yet.

    Fuge flow rate

I assume that some water is normally picked up by the skimmer more than once. In my current wet/dry the pump picks up water from the same chamber that the skimmer discharges into. In this case it happens to be in the first chamber where the water enters. Excess water overflows into the diffusion...

    Fuge flow rate

How should I keep my pods from flowing through the baffle and into the skimmer/discharge area? I figured if I put the baffle plates close together and placed a thin course sponge in there I'd be good to. I have a sponge (prefilter) in the overflo box and leave one floating in the wet/dry so...
