Do I need to feed otocinclus catfish?

Hello, if I have a healthy (too much!) Supply of green algae on rocks, etc., do I need to feel my otocinclus catfish algae wafers? I occasionally drop a small piece in but I'm not sure it's really necessary.

    Hang on back filter necessary?

Thanks all. Yeah mine just has the cartridiges with two layes of the floss with what seems like activated carbon in between. The reason I posted was because I was considering doing something like you did Gomez. I want to not use those disposable filters anymore though. Maybe just a sponge that I...

    Hang on back filter necessary?

So I've had my first tank, 10 gallons for about 8 months now. My main question is this: if the BB in the tank is what breaks down waste and cleans the tank, why do I have this cheesy little floss filter media? Is the HOB filter just a glorified water mover or is that floss media actually...

    Snail Identification?

I didn't have the success controlling them that fresh2o had. It doesn't help that I'm battling algae so there is plenty of food. I squish them occasionally to provide a snack to my ghost shrimp. That's keeps them in check okay. I'm ready to get rid of them through.

    Snail Identification?

Looks like the common pond snails that found their way into my aquarium. I can't remember the scientific name for them nor find the webpage I used to identify them though. Sorry.

    Water test kit recommendation

I've just been puting in a root tab every once in a while.

    Water test kit recommendation

Thanks. That mostly tells me the water parameters are safe for the fish. What about plants nutrients? Or do I just fertilize when I change water and not worry about it?

    Water test kit recommendation

I'm looking for a (cheap) water test kit for a planted aquarium. What are the critical parameters (beyond the few parameters that the LFS checks for free:nitrite, nitrates, chlorine, pH, hardness)? Or is that enough? Any recommendation for specific products? I'm mostly interested in micro/macro...

Anyone have ideas for some DIY LEDs to replace my tubes?

Yeah, mine work fine. My plants aren't exploding, but I don't even fertilize... Just occasional root tabs. I would like them to grow faster, but I am probably nutrient/co2 limited.

Anyone have ideas for some DIY LEDs to replace my tubes?

Hey Fisher, what method do you use to determine lighting conditions for "low light" plants vs non-low light plants? I've seen various tables but not sure I've found one that I trust. I assume you'd have to compare in lumens since LEDs and and tube lights have different electro-optical conversion...

Anyone have ideas for some DIY LEDs to replace my tubes?

The only negative feedback I have about these products is that the timer is very unintuitive to set up and loses it's setting if it loses power. Other than that, this is a great set up for me.

Anyone have ideas for some DIY LEDs to replace my tubes?

I reposted the links but it didn't seem to post... Here they are again. This require soldering some wires to the strips, but I think they even make connectors for these strips that eleminate even that small amount of soldering. Note that the power supply is slightly under rated if you use all...

Oh, and this power supply: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007ME2HMQ?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_pd_title Note that you the power supply is at the slightly underrated if you use the whole string led string. Here are photos:

Thoughts about algaefix or algae eliminator additives?

Hi, I'm having simmilar problems as the op except I think my algae is string algae and brown algae . What plants do you suggest? I've currently got two different species of java ferns in my 10 gallon, so not heavily planted. Working to add more plants. I have an outbreak of pond snails that I...

    Hello all!

Thanks king fisher. It’s got two led strips. 1.5 watts is marked on one, so I’m assuming that’s only 3 watts total. From what I read, I need 10 watts minimum in a 10 gallon for even low light plants. Don’t know if it’s true, but the grass I have on the bottom right of the picture (I forgot what...

    Hello all!

I’m new to the fish world. Just got my first 10 gallon set up. I’m really enjoying the biodiversity. I’ve got fish, ghost shrimp, one golden muster snail, and some pond snails that snuck in somehow. I’m looking to plant more live plants but I’m looking for a good under-hood light. Any...
