    Endlers and pandas

The cories are sharing my betta's tank. They've actually been in a couple weeks, but their fins were pretty ragged when I got them. Starting to heal up nicely. There's 5 in all, this is just 2 of them: And these Endler's are my first ever fish gotten by mail, very exciting. Received this...

    swordplant ID please

Anyone care to guess the species of this: It's maybe 6" tall now, short petioles, long oval leaves with rounded ends, and a pair of veins that go from halfway down the leaf to the tip. I couldn't find anything on Plantgeek that looks like it, but about half their sword are missing pictures.

    FS Hygro salicifolia

I'm moving this out to make room for some new plants coming. "Willow leaf" Hygrophila salicifolia, a nice narrow leafed stem plant. I have about 20 stems available, each with at least 8 or 10 good leaves on it. Older leaves have had some deficiencies (turning white), but the new growth...

    Stem plants for shipping

I got a freebie bag of trimmings from a fish store yesterday, and since I'm going off stem plants I'm offering them to a better home, if you'll cover the shipping. I think I've managed to ID them with PlantGeek, but please correct me if I'm mistaken: Rotala rotundifolia(?), at least 12 long...

    Lighting decision

In my 55 gallon, I now have 2x65W daylight pc lights, 10 hours a day. The bulk of the plants in it are Hygrophila salicifolia, with a few smallish anubias and crypts. I guess I'm around the borderline for CO2, which I'm not going to do. I want to change this tank over to a lower-growth, lower...

    Why can't I grow vals?

I have a 10 gallon tank with 40W daylight pc lights, 10hours/day. I put in about 10 plants of vals (not sure what species, leaves are loosely twisted) on September 16, so about 3 weeks ago. Basically all the leaves appear to be dying. They looked healthy to start out, and each leaf starts...

    A couple new shots

My 10 gallon with some new additions: Added a trio of dwarf platies, and some plants: vals, which are rotting all over the place (why? :?), a melon sword which is comically large for this tank, an Ozelot (?) sword which is not, and some crypt parva. And another shot, some flame moss I'm...

55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

I've been planning to move my 55 gallon from a side room to the living room for some time now (was meaning to do it this summer ). It will happen eventually, so I want to start thinking/planning out loud here, and eventually this will be a log for the move and makeover. To start with...

    What's on my nose?

This morning I noticed something odd on my betta's face (and it's not a water spot on the glass, though it looks like one): I'm one week into the heat treatment for ich on this tank, so it might be ich, but I thought it didn't really look like it. Any opinions on what this might be? Info...

    Snail macros. Update: nerites?!

Here's a couple shots of some new snails I got from a biological supply house. They are some species of Physa. When viewed normally the shells are a uniform olive green color, but up close the naked eye can just make out these bands on the shell. They're pretty neat looking, I think. I...

Yet another office pico tank log -- New pics 9/20/07

Just starting to set up a cute little tank I found a while back. Pictures to start: Dry tank, sizing up a piece of driftwood (decided it was too big, so this dw is currently in my 10g betta tank, and I have a smaller piece that will be in the pico). (And excuse the hideous picture quality, I...

Java moss & Marimo moss balls available

As mentioned in this thread, I've been extracting shrimp from a big hunk of Java moss. The job is done, and I'd like to get rid of most of it. There's enough to send a decent handful to 4 or 5 people at least, I think. I also have a couple Marimo moss balls (see here, I don't have a photo of...

Airation causes pH change during acclimation

I've read somewhere some warnings not to aerate when acclimating fish after shipping. I think the idea was that the aeration would cause pH to shift, which would lead the ammonia in the water to change to a more toxic form or something... Anyway, this seems like a good thread to ask, does...

    New betta

Well, I finally gave in to the betta temptation. He's in his own 10 gallon, with an established filter. Will be planting later, but for now he's just got some driftwood and java fern.

    Everybody likes zucchini (feeding video)

Here's a video of my albino BN pleco, who really likes his zucchini. Also featuring guest appearances by kubotai loaches, pearl gourami, and a wandering ghost shrimp. Direct link: http://s132.photobucket.com/albums/q1/majolo57/?action=view&current=feeding_zuc2.flv

    Goofy problem

Okay, I don't think I've seen this one before. I have a 10 gal tank with a colony of a couple dozen Cherry shrimp. I also put in a ball of Java moss because I got sick of it getting sucked into the filter in my main tank (the shrimp tank has sponge filtration). Now the moss has done what Java...

Do you think I got enough?

I just can't pass up a nice piece of driftwood! The three smallest pieces here I bought yesterday, and the larger three are from about a month ago. This is on top of 3 large pieces already in my 55g, and one more soaking in a bucket... The plan is, when I change over the substrate to sand...

Recent shots (loaches, gourami, snail, shrimp)

I haven't posted any shots of my tank lately, and since I'm actually getting to a point where I feel pretty satisfied with it, now seems like a good time! 55 gal FW planted --------------------- Full tank: Pearl gourami: Kubotai loaches madly trying to get a sinking wafer that slipped...

    New kubotai loaches

I got these 3 to replace the ill-fated malnourished ones I had gotten earlier, documented in this thread (the last of them died after hanging on a couple weeks more). Here they are in the QT, where they decided the heater was the best "cave" to hang out at (the lights on this tank are a...

    Show off your crustaceans!

I'll start the ball rolling with one of my bamboo shrimp (Atyopsis moluccensis): So let's see them! Shrimp, crabs, crayfish; fresh, salty, brackish -- Roll call!

    Cloudy Flourish?

I just started a new bottle of Flourish comprehensive, which I use for dosing iron/traces. This new bottle seems very different from the first one I had. The liquid is much more transparent and yellowish (vs. dark brown for the first bottle) and it seems to be clouding the water significantly...

    skinny kubotai loach

I bought 3 kubotai loaches at Petsmart to increase my shoal to 6, since they are supposedly very social. The loaches they had were all painfully skinny, but I hoped I could nurse them back to health. I put them in a quarantine tank for 2 weeks. First I treated for internal parasites with...

    kubotai loach video

A while ago I posted a video of these loaches doing a bit of fighting over the pecking order. The video was awful, and in the meantime I have figured out how to use my camera a bit better. So I caught them at it more recently and got a much better video of them (click to view video): This...

    Sponge filter Q

I got an Azoo sponge filter (This one), and it doesn't really have directions. It lists "features". Anyway, how do I use this? There are two tubes on top, a large and a small. I assumed I would hook up an air pump to the small one and that's it. I tried it, and I just get some bubbles...
