    Question for Successful Guppy Keepers

I've had guppies for years in my community tanks, and they've always been the most fragile species for me. I really have no idea why they live or die (i've had some for 2 years, some only last a couple of weeks). And i wouldn't believe that "the tank is too big" excuse. How could they get...

    How to Adjust Lighting

I've programmed my Fluval light to have a slow "sunrise" over a few hours, set it for 60% for the part of the day when I'm working, bump it up to 100% for the evenings when i'm in the same room, and then a slow "sunset" period. It's light enough that I can enjoy it and help the plants, but...

    What's your fish(s) names?

Mine are all named Eric. Except whichever one you're actually focussing on at a particular moment. His/Her name is Thomas.

That does look like a good filter :thumb:

    Aquaclear 70?

I’ve always thought of the filters as cleaning the water biologically, rather than cleaning up debris. If the filter is strong enough to suck up debris, you might suck your fish against the intake too. For debris, I’d suck it up when vacuuming for a water change. I doubt a canister filter would...

    Angel vs Monto Carlo

Thanks. I don't really want to try a screen, at the moment it's all planted in a curve and among other plants. I guess i'll just keep pulling it off the filter intake and replanting it. Eventually, something will take root and succeed. :)

    Aqueon Metal Forge Stand 29g

Assuming the Kallax is big enough to fit under the aquarium, I'd put it back on that. My old tank was 55Gal on a Kallax, and it was more than strong enough.

Good idea, I’m taking your advice too. Thanks!

    Angel vs Monto Carlo

Last week I ordered some Monte Carlo, and planted it in my Fluval Plant Statum substrate. My Angel fish constantly pulls it all up, before it can get a chance to take root. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this?

    Tank upgrade

Like Charlie said, what works works. Having said that, if it was me I'd keep both and separate them: One tank for the goldfish, one for the others. Goldfish tend to thrive in colder water than tropical freshwater fish (or so i've read).

    Is this ok?

I wouldn't rely on smell or appearance. Buy an API Master Test Kit, and test the water for Nitrates. Assuming your aquarium has been cycled, the main reason for a water change is to keep the Nitrates under 40ppm.

Desperate for some advice on tank cycling!

I can't speak for a fish-less cycle, I've never done one. However, you've got your axolotl in another tank? If so, can you move some of that filter's media into the new aquarium filter? I did that when I got my 2nd aquarium a couple of months ago, let the filter run overnight to circulate the...

New, help on 2 weeks old planted tank

The trauma of being uprooted can ruin the current crop, but as noted above the plants should regrow. If the leaves start to rot, trim them off and wait for the good ones to come in.

    Constant Ammonia Problems

Are you testing the Nitrites and Nitrates too? If those are reading '0', i don't know why it's taking so long to cycle. If the Nitrites are showing, the process is mid-cycle as that's what the Ammonia turns into. If Nitrates are showing, the Ammonia and Nitrites should be '0', and that's when...

How often do I need to change a Freshwater tank after a successful cycle

I'd be hesitant to cycle a tank with Guppies. They're pretty fragile, at least the ones my local LFS sells... I've done two fish-in cycles, and bought a few Danios. They're pretty hardy.

    Aquarium & Health Hazards

Essentially, you're putting your hand into a (fish) toilet. Treat it the same  For example, if you've got open cuts on your hand, find another way.

    Help water out of control!

I don't think i've seen high ammonia, nitrites, AND nitrates. Logically, once you have nitrates, the ammonia and nitrites should be 0... Are you sure you're following the test instructions properly?

How often do I need to change a Freshwater tank after a successful cycle

Like the others have said, it depends on your tank setup and when the Nitrates get close to 40ppm. I have a planted and heavily-stocked 37 Gallon tank, and it needs a 30% water change ever 4 weeks. I have a lightly-planted, lightly-stocked 9 Gallon tank that needs a 30% change weekly. I like to...

Dwindling java fern/ need to grow algae

Your cycling and water changes might be affecting the Java Fern (and are almost definitely affecting your fish). With that many fish in a 20Gal, you should probably be doing water changes weekly. Probably 25% or so. Your ammonia SHOULD be 0 all the time. What are your nitrates testing at...

    Water change question

So you're looking at changing around 15 gallons each time? I change about the same amount, and found it easier to use a 5Gal bucket. I empty the old water into it in 3 or 4 trips (dumping it down the kitchen sink), then refill from the kitchen tap and walk it back to the aquarium. It's a lot...

    Water change question

How big is your aquarium? Using a 50-55 gallon drum for a water change seems a LOT of work! There might be a better way.

New to owning fish, general questions

+1 on "don't listen to the shop about cycling!" Aiken has given good advice. But i will add that i wouldn't worry about the activity around the aquarium. At least with human eyes, it appears that they only see a reflection of the tank as long as it's brighter than the room it's in. I have a...
