Yes check your water. I believe this was your original problem, chlorine since it will kill fish in hours, and you said you never cycle a tank and don't add any de chlorination. Chlorine information is here and more here. Chlorine in the aquarium.

    Fluval/Aqua Clear

I gave up on Aquaclears and went with Tidal Filters, 75 and 55. Always restarts after a power failure, removable basket for easy cleaning, tons of room for pot scrubbies or foam and easily pimped for more water flow.

MIght as well check the stator to see if it works. Take off the head unit, turn it upside down. Remove the impeller. Plug the unit back in. Take a screwdriver and put it in the hole and move it all around. It should pull to all sides everywhere. Check for a weak spot.

    Ammonia Help!!

Looks like you are right on track with cycling your filter. As mentioned above this will take 3-8 weeks to complete. If this is a fishless cycle, do not change any water as this will remove the necessary ammonia needed in your filter to cultivate your beneficial bacteria. Do not clean the...

Why do my neon tetras keep dying? Please help!

Agree with @charliebankston. Fish Which aren’t Recommended And then there are fish decidedly not recommended for beginners. Topping the list: Do not get Neons for a new Aquarium! Neons are a “blackwater” fish which needs very bacteria-free, crystal-clear water that one only gets in a...

    New fish die instantly.

Well since you state you have 2-4 ppm ammonia, you should change 50% water now. Test everyday until you see your ammonia at 0. Would be nice to test your tap water itself for ammonia too. Just in case there is some in there.

    New fish die instantly.

I'm sorry, no new fish for you. Ammonia it too high and it appears like the above you have to finish your filter cycling. Ammonia and nitrite will be 0 when the cycle is finished before you can add any more fish. As stated before... Once up and running, you can put your fish back in...

    Switch from UGF to HOB

Just for you since you like to verify on that web site. There is a type of nitrifying organism called archaea which can operate at very low pH. The problem is that these organism are what are called obligative acidophiles. I.e. they ONLY work at low pH. These organisms also grow very slowly...

    Switch from UGF to HOB

No. Never said that. It just that you have more abundant bacteria with fast water movement through your media which can by used to help cycle your new filter since you had a power UG filter. There is basically no bacteria on the substrate (less than 10%) anyway without a UG filter. It all...

    Switch from UGF to HOB

Pretty simple. Not enough air flow to pull a lot water through the gravel. You need fast water movement through your media for bacteria to grow. That's why a power head for more water movement is better. Simple.
