    Parasite in guppy

Do you think this is a parasite? It’s long and white and has a black tip. If it is a parasite, should I treat the whole tank, or can I get away with just removing this guppy. If I treat the tank will it crash my cycle? Thanks

    cycling a new planted tank

I do know how to do a fish in cycle. I guess I was hoping that the melting of aquarium plants was adding a sufficient source of ammonia, but now I wonder since ammonia/nitrite are both at zero again. Guess I’ll pick up a couple of hardy fish to add. Thanks.

    cycling a new planted tank

I've had my tank (21Gallon, long) set up for about 2 1/2 weeks. I only added plants and tried to seed it with a filter and a few plants from a cycled tank (which I've since removed). I was quickly getting ammonia readings of about .25ppm and nitrite at 2ppm. After a large water change this...

White spot on betta - ID?

Never mind - got some advice and a product from my local aquarium shop! They think it's a fungus.

White spot on betta - ID?

My betta has a white spot that has grown a bit in the last week. I ordered some Seachem Neoplex that arrives tomorrow because I thought this could be columnaris, but now I'm doubting my diagnosis. About my tank: - 1 betta, 1 nerite - planted - weekly PWC (about 15%) - Was in a 3 gallon-ish...

    Algae?

Thanks, Aiken Drum. I literally just changed the timer for my light, as I came across the 6-8 hour advice on this forum. Going to clean and get a snail. Thanks!

    Algae?

Also, should note the following: - 3 gallon tank, 1 betta - no idea on wattage of light - aquarium came in a kit and I can’t find any info on light - light is on timer from 7am-7pm - tank is in sunny room but not in direct sun - no CO2 or fertilizer administered - planted with Anubias, Java...

    Algae?

What kind of algae do I have growing on my filter, heater, and rocks (and plants, I think)? What can I do about it other than scrubbing it off? I looked into some AQI products that say they remove algae, but it seems like they may harm my fish. Thank you!

Yes, I think I see some signs of new growth, so I will wait it out. Thank you again for all of your help.

    Plant problems? New aquarium.

Hi - new hobbyist here. I've had my tank for maybe a month or so. It's a 3 gallon, planted tank with one betta. I think it's cycled (no ammonia or nitrite, trace nitrate -- less than 20ppm), but the plants are showing signs of problems. See pics. The anubias are not planted in substrate. One has...

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Thanks, Autumnsky! Very helpful. I'm feeding him Hikari micropellets for tropical fish. I have been giving him enough to eat in about 2-3 minutes, per some other website I read, but it's probably too much! I will switch to twice daily feeds, since he does seem to be on the small side (so maybe a...

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Update: I replaced my betta from PetSmart, and he's been in his tank for just over a week. I thought he wasn't going to make it, either, but as of a few days ago, he's active and vibrant and eating. So, good news! I do have some more questions. I am not getting any detectable ammonia, nitrate...

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Well, I went to a local, reputable aquarium shop yesterday and spoke to a woman who gave some encouragement and good advice (which was basically the same as yours). She says the bettas from PetSmart aren't in good condition to begin with and aren't humanely treated. That may be the reason for my...

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Bad news Found the fish dead in his tank this morning :( Maybe it was the stress of it all or the fact that I had to replace his filter last night. I don’t know. Now what do I do? Should I change the water and start over, or let the cycle continue (after I remove the poor fish)? I get a...

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Thanks for the link to this article. Very, very helpful! One question for you, though. The article recommends changing about 50% of the tank water weekly. I have a 3-gallon tank with a single betta. Would you still recommend changing this much?

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Thanks so much! I will do all of that. Just to clarify: I should add the bacteria starter after my daily water changes until the cycle has completed, correct? And after that only when I do my maintenance water changes (until starter is gone)?

ANOTHER noob question about cycling. Help!

Hi - I went to PetSmart a couple of days ago to get a fish for my 4-year-old. I know nothing about aquariums and am hoping to get all of the information (sometimes conflicting?) straight in our set up. Here's what I have: 1 betta in a 3 gallon tank with filter and heater. I followed the...
